I, as well as the most of you, am sure that we all like coyote hunting in this thread. With that being said, I want to hunt year-round for yotes. During this time of the year, what is everyone using for sounds at the moment? I am using about a 10-year-old foxpro shockwave, so i dont have any of the new sounds currrently. What cadence of calls would you guys recommend using this time of the year.

Only pup distress? What else are you using? Being from the flatlands of ND, and the primary source of coyote food is rabbits, I can play lots of rabbit distress only, but sometimes i do have to mix it up.

Fawn blats, if you have antelope or deer in your areas work well this time of year. Adult antelope and deer blats are also good now. Coyote vocalizations that aren't overly aggressive, no challenges mostly the locator type.

We have antelope in the western part of the state but unfortuneatly i am from the eastern part. Im gonna have to try these out when its not blisteringly hot

The more I call coyotes....the less I understand! I am absolutely not even close to being a coyote hunter! Hunting an animal that hunts other animals for its food has been an eye opener for me.

Here in North Texas pack dispersal is done.....I think. We are seeing 1-3 coyotes of the similar age class running together. We are not seeing big packs as of last weekend BUT a friend of mine 60 miles away is. For reference 60 miles in this part of the world is basically next door. We will see 10-20 rabbits both Jack and cotton tail at each stand. And mice and birds and hogs and deer and calfs. There is no shortage of food here!!

I'm realizing that with the surplus of food these coyotes don't have to travel and they won't travel more than about half a mile. Even if you are "calling them in" from a mile away.....they are highly likely to literally stumble across a more attractive target.

We are seeing periods of inactivity when the moon is high and bright and the humidity is high and the wind is low......does this mean anything? I have absolutely no clue lol! I'm trying to pattern coyotes like I pattern crappie or deer and it ain't working!

Me and my partner hunted from 8pm till 5am. We made stands ranging from 15-45min. I started call sequences with locator calls at first then lone howls later in the night. Followed by bird distress and then later on cotton tail distress. I went from 1/4 volume to full volume. I tried all coyote vocals. I tried all distress calls. The one thing I didn't try was aggressive coyote vocals. We called in one coyote at 9pm and didn't see another one all night. We didn't hear very many either. The following afternoon 3 different deer hunters shot at 3 and killed 2 coyotes without calling between 3pm and 4:30pm on different corners of the ranch!

What I learned is that coyotes will shut off like a light switch! If it's not cold and their bellies are full......they have no reason to move. Watch your dog at home. My high energy very active Labrador will still sleep 16hrs a day especially if there is no activity at the house. You have to basically set up right on top of them to get a response. They definitely have periods of activity and inactivity. I think thermal hunting has made coyotes more active during the day than they might have been 5-7 years ago.....or it's just easier to hunt during the day right now.
