APDDSN0864 , Did you get a fawn crop this year , how big are they in your area at this time , have you been having any luck with fawn blats or adult deer , antelope or elk distress sounds in your area ?
Really small (numbers and size) Mule Deer fawn crop this year. They have lost their spots already and are doing OK, the does are looking a little thin, but they should start packing the weight back on since the vegetation is recovering.
There's not many Elk in my area, mostly right along the base of the Guadalupe Mountains, and the drought affected their food sources as well.
I haven't seen any Antelope fawns in my area.
A couple of bear sightings where we don't normally see them, they appear to be 2 1/2 year olds looking for their own territory.
Mountain Lions are doing well, but roaming quite a bit farther than normal, probably due to the lack of prey, too.
We've had significant rains and flooding in the past month and our monsoon season is just starting, so I expect the vegetation will continue to grow.
There wasn't much of a coyote pup crop, either and I expect the lions are working them over, too.
The feral pigs have started moving back in from Texas, up the Pecos drainage, as I found fresh sign in a couple of areas in the past few days.
Feral Swine will respond to calls, too.
They are a bonus!
I am seeing a small increase in Cottontail and Jackrabbit numbers, which is encouraging.
The number of raptors are really down as are the vulture numbers.
Right now, Sernades and Interrogation Howls get me started, then I have to switch small prey sounds at a lower level ( winds permitting) to get them to come in.
Fawn beats, calf distress, and pup distress calls are working OK, but not as well as I had hoped.
They're not moving a lot as the pups are kinda small, but that should pick up a bit in the next few weeks.
That's the view from here.
