Coyote hunting tips

Reemty you mentioned eye exercises that helped you spot game. Please tell us your short routine that has worked so well for you. Thanks

I would guess one thing he meant was these people on TV are hit and run callers, hit a large area and get the easy coyotes that come in and move on, the call wise or educated coyotes are left and those are possibly the ones that cause livestock problems. The ones that take time to kill. But knowing Dave he will make an entrance on this subject.......I will give an example, the area I killed 15 coyotes in the last 3 weeks, earlier a local caller hit it, not sure what he took, but I know it is no where close to 15, just call and go, if they don't come move on......most I saw were not interested in a call, so......plan B

Your eyes are controlled by 5-6 muscles the stronger they are the better focus you have, I roll my eyes 10 times in a large circle to the right, and then 10 times to the left, 10 times up and down, max each way, 10 times left and right. Then I tip my head down a little and look up to the right then down then up to the left then down 10 times.....like the v in doubles trains my eye to see second target..... then eye " pushups" hold your thumb out at arms length, have something in the distance above it to focus on, focus on your thumb nail a few seconds then out to something behind it 50 yards or more away, then your thumb nail, then out......do this a lot, what you will find is, your eyes go out slow but come in fast, focus well each time... you do this for a week and you be amazed what it does and your reflexes get faster also. There are some more but i use these a lot......the eye muscles are like any muscle in your body, the more you use them the stronger and better they are, I recommenced lifting weights 3 times a week also.......in 3-6 months with a weight program, anyone can change themselves to the positive, GOD gave you am amazing resilient body for a reason, use it. 🙏🤝👍

Spot and stalk if the terrain will allow........ when I call a coyote I take it personal, if they hang up out there, hear my sounds and don't come, I sit there and let them go. After a fashion they lose interest and move over the rise, then I get up and move as fast and as quietly as possible, glasses in hand, work my way over the rise slow, glassing everything I can, you have to see them 1st or your done. Part of the time I can get close enough, range them and make a kill.....a coyote on his feet is an alert coyote, a coyote curled up sleeping is easier to approach with some uneven topography.....flat country makes it extremely difficult. A lot of places here are not flat

geo4061 , When you are filming to make a show you move around to differing areas , You call for 15 to 20 min. per stand and move on so you can hit the most spots you can in a day and get as much footage as you can so you can show your watchers coyote coming in and being shot . You may never call the same area again so it doesn't matter if you educate some coyote it's not going to be your problem . When you are there for the fur you most of the time are from near by where you are calling and call the same area again and again year after year so you want to slow down call some then wait look and listen so as not to make the coyote smart to your style so you can get the numbers of coyote from your smaller calling area to pay for some gas and ammo while they are prime for just a short period of time each year . Being your hunting area you will spend more time in the off season looking and learning where they live , hunt and lay up to make your odds better . You will spend more time just learning then the guys that hit and run call hoping to make a living filming calling and hunting coyote for your entertainment . When you are out there to do control work you live around the people that you will be working for if you don't do a good job of killing the problem coyote word gets around fast if you do a good job of finding and killing the problem coyote word spreads fast also. When you are doing control work you need to learn the coyote , fox bobcat well so you know where to start looking for the problem coyote fox cat ect . . You need to know what you are looking for if you have kills look for sign of what killed the animal , how far apart are the teeth holes in the neck an inch or so means fox or bob cat an inch and a half means coyote . Do you have tracks to tell you what was there . Then you need to find where they came in to make the kill so you know where to look for them . You do not want to abuse any of your tools in the same area as then you will have coyote that are killers and smart to your ways , you will have hell to pay trying to get then killed so the killing stops . When you do control work it doesn't matter what time of the year it is you have to kill the killers , and their pups as usually they are feeding pups and that is the reason they are killing . You need to be able to track them to find where they are living but if you know the coyote and the area you are working you have a head start as the coyote that fill in where you have taken them out will fill in to the same general places as the ones from past years . Thus you have made a notebook of all your coyote that you killed where they lived where they denned where they crawled under the fence what draws they traveled was it just a pair or did they have another coyote helping raise the pups . I've seen them have two females both with pups , I ve also seen them have a male from last year helping raise the pups . Some of the things a caller for fun does and callers that fur hunt or do control work are the same . It doesn't matter what type of caller you are you will do better by learning about the animal you are after .

I also do eye exercises and use a brock string to help me use both eyes open when shooting look it up on youtube . I use meditation and visualization to help me focus , be aware of my surroundings, sights ,sounds , smells whats going to be under my feet beside me ect. .

And that's why they offered and paid me$ 75.00 for each coyote killed summer, fall , winter or spring . Some that called me and had bad problems paid $ 150.00 I did my best to make the problem go away as fast as possible often in one or two days . It's hard work but can be rewarding as well as frustrating .

All animals make some sounds when they are afraid , hurt , happy , or just want to socialize those sounds normally don't last for extended periods of time . Yes I have listened to coyote that were bothered talk for more then half an hour but that isn't the norm they had pups most of the time and were trying to get an invader out of the area of the den much the same as killdeer birds do . Some of the mistakes that I have made and learned from are so basic it scares me that I actually did them . First off I learned how to approach my calling stand then set up to call and that horse has been ridden on this site often .Next I needed to actually listen to what the animals had to say . For the most part animals don't have big lungs and can't talk as long as we can nor as loud as we can . I would venture a guess that for the most part in todays world most people have never heard the real animal make the sounds that we try to imitate . All animals make sounds but having smaller lungs and bodies then us their sounds are lower in volume and shorter in duration then most of us realize . With the advent of the e-callers a lot of people turn the volume up too high and let it play too long . Set your call up turn it on then walk down range where you would call listen to it if you can hear it at 200 or 300 yards it's too loud the animals we want to call have better hearing then we do and if we can hear it at 300 yards they can hear it at nearly a mile . Next animals all quit screaming after a minute or two at the most , they either die , get tired out or make their escape and then want to hide from what ever made them scream . I play my e-caller for a couple of minutes on a low volume turn it off for up to 10 min then just watch and listen before I do it again . After doing this a couple of times I will then turn the volume up loud for 30 sec. to 1 min. turn it off and set , watch and listen . Pay attention to what the animals tell you when they react to your calling do they hang up at 200 to 300 yards then chances are your too loud , playing it too long or moving around too much maybe you have something shinny flashing they aren't comfortable with what your doing so think back at what you did this time and see if you can figure out what you want to do different on the next stand . Try to learn about the animal you want to hunt be it coyote, fox , bobcat , deer , elk , antelope , rabbits the more you know about them the better your chances will be . Be calm , aware and enjoy what you are out there to do safely respect the land and animals they aren't dumb and we are in their home range that they know as well as we do our homes . I can only hope that I may have helped someone enjoy the art of calling more .

Hey guys I am fairly new to coyote hunting and new to this site. I am shooting a rem 700sps varmit in .243 1:9 with a 26"barrel. I currently load a 75 gr v-max and they make a hole that could sink a ship in no time. I am looking for a bullet that won"t make a mess. I live in north west North Dakota so the wind can get heavy. Any advice is much appreciated
I've used Hornady 87 grain HPBT, doesn't always drop them in their tracks but never had one go very far

I really appreciate you all taking our coyote hunting to the next level. As to the eye exercises. Ya'll have given me a headache. Sore eye muscles I guess. (LOL) Hint, start out with just one rep.
