Cooper 92 6.5-284 gaining accuracy

Could the barrel be touching the stock somewhere? Loose action screw possibly ? Sounds like you are well on your way, just gotta figure out the fliers.
Just took it apart. There is a bur on the bedding in two spots. I will clean it up and reassemble. retorque and reload then hit the range tomorrow.

my model 21 6.5-284 shoots 143 eldx-47.0 Rl22 ans 210m primers into .350 groups,140 Noler Bt 46.0 Rl22 210m into .211 groups and berger 130 hunting 50.0 Retumbo (very hot) 210m into .443 groups ( going to drop down to 49.0 and see what happens) all loads done at 3.0 to 3.1 oal hope this helps.Jim
That is very helpful. I am curios as to why 50gr of retumbo is hot. I am running 58 gr and 140 berger vld with no pressure signs. Max load in Berger book is 58.5 with 140. I will try and load down to 3.0 however it looks like i will have to back the charge off to make room for the bullet.

The 6.5x284 is my favorite cartridge.
I have a couple and have worked up loads for a few others, my pet loads are 52-55 grains of h4831sc. 10-20 thou off the lands with berger 140 elite hunters. shoots in the .1's -.3's all day. I would recommend giving that load a try. Didn't have the accuracy I was after with the 143 x bullets and i tried quite a bit to make em work, just couldn't compare to the bergers.
On the flyer issue is it always your 3rd shot? or last? My dad is a very good shot but if he puts the first 2 shots in the same hole you can bet the third is gonna be off, why? excitement the group is so tight that adrenaline / composure / overthinking or whatever he does he sends a flyer, always the last shot, always. hopefully the bur issue fixes it, but give that load a try. Best of luck

I think it is funny everybody think cooper rifles are shooters and most are but that target you get with the gun is shot at 32 yards read the target I have seen some that don't shoot and are bad.

It does not state the range. Thought about that too. It does carry 1/2 inch guarantee at 100 yds though I have not seen it. While i do agree with shooter error blah blah blah. Most of my target shooting is with a 300 rum so in comparison the 6.5 is a glitter sprinkler in recoil management. If I dont get sub .5 3-5 shot groups it will go to a smith for a pacnor. The bolt and action are real nice pieces. I just cant own a rifle that costs that much but shoots like a remington 788. Really im mad at myself right now because i could have bought one remington, one savage and one ruger and had all 3 shooting better for less money.

The rifles are shot at 50 yards for QC purposes only. They used to be shot at 47 until they built their new facility. If it will not shoot less than .5 I would not rebarrel until after calling Cooper. They will take care of it.

Even with a great gun, you still have to make it shoot.
I could take a barrel/load combo that shoots truly competitive levels, and adjust seating and powder and primers to cause >1/2moa from it. Nothing wrong with that ammo, it would simply be all wrong for the barrel.
So I can't imagine a 1/2moa guarantee -with just any ammo of your choosing.

Absolutely. I've never owned one of these magical rifles that shoots everything you feed it.

maybe I missed it, but what's the twist rate? If it's an 8 or 8.5, take a look at H4350. I am on my 12 or 13th barrel in 6.5x284 and H4350 between 46-49gr shoots sub half MOA in every one of them with 140 match bullets jumped. 015" - .045". I cannot imagine one of the 130-140 bullets won't shoot. H4831SC is my second favorite. Fed210 with H4350, Rem 9 1/2M with H4831SC.

It is 8 twist. The test load from cooper was with the 120 gmx and 4831 however it consistently shoots the 140 berger better but not great. I have another round to try and tighten up the .7s. Will report back after the range in a couple hours.

Well I have to own up to what I did. I got in a hurry and failed to adjust the parralax on my scope to my eye. Basically the reticle has been floating around. Loading up more rounds and heading back to the range.

We all make mistakes! I know when I'm having difficulties, usually taking a step back and focusing on the fundamentals will get me back on track unless I'm having a legitimate equipment issue.

I don't know if Cooper told you this bit if you are the original owner they will replace the barrel for 125.00 for as long as you own it.I tested mine when I got it as they said they shot it with a Sierra 142 matchking and gave me the powder, grains primer and col.then I shot it and beat the original group it shot a 1/4 group.
