Posting anything in the thread (PM sent, I'll take it etc) recently is inviting scams, and it can make the seller look like the scammer. I had it happen tonight on another forum, was chatting back and forth with a guy and he tells me I need to check if I have been hacked, as he just received a text from a person claiming to be me. I dug through his post and sure enough, he posted his number in a thread back in 2020. Scammer saw he posted "PM sent" in the add, found his number in 5 minutes just like I did and posed as me.

If he would have fallen for it ( he realized right away something wasn't right thankfully) it could make me look real bad, and I would prefer to not have my name drug through the mud because people leave tracks of their personal info all over the net and scammers are getting real good at finding them. If you don't post anything in the thread you close the door on these types of scamming.

Via text on his cell. This just happened here and a guy got scammed and was calling the seller out and he had the wrong guy and couldn't understand how it happened. Took the real seller a few days to log back in to see his name being trashed which was really unfortunate. I tried to link the thread but it looks like it got nuked. I found the guys number in about 2 minutes on that one.

There have been a few instances of guys claiming that sellers have been hacked, LRH isn't secure or protecting their info etc. None of that is the case, it all comes down to either posting their numbers somewhere and dealing thru text with scammers who dig it up or posting something in a listing and the scammers make a almost identical handle to the real seller -John123 vs J0hn123 and send a pm posing as the seller and offer a crazy deal.

The handle copycatting is more of a hide deal but it happens everywhere.

The interested buyer post in the thread "pm sent" "I'll take it" etc. Scammer clicks their profile, scrolls post for a few minutes to see if he can find where they posted their number. If they find it they text that number posing as the seller. This is copied from the guy who posed as me tonight in his text to the interested buyer:

Good day this is ckleeves from the forum, sending you this pm in response to your comment on my ads of Benchmark 7.75 twist 6mm #5 blank, I'm looking up to sell on the forum,, where're you located?Let me know if you're willing to take it,then we work out a deal.

The buyers number. Scammers found it, posed as the seller and contacted him and he fell for it. Guys have a major problem posting their numbers on this forum. Just watch the classifieds you see it all the time "can't pm yet, text me about your scope 867-5309". All a scammer has to do is text the number and say "hey this is Billy Bob from LRH with the scope here is my PayPal"

So if you have never posted you number publicly it's acceptable for the buyer to post "I'll take it" or "PM sent"

Sure if you really feel the need to. I have done it plenty, I have stopped just because although I'm not falling for scams I feel it sets a bad example for guys who aren't real internet savvy and I hate seeing people get scammed because they aren't familiar with how these scammers operate. It used to be the "rule" to put out a public "I'll take it" but for many people they are setting themselves up for problems.

Thanks @Ckleeves for the deep dive on the explanation. I'm tracking now. I was confused on how that stuff would work with the way I've done business as a buyer in the past. I always trade info in the PMs and not anywhere public facing.

Looking at the example in post #62, I would be skeptical right off the bat. 1. Spelling and grammar. Always a dead giveaway for scammers. 2. Anyone selling something in the classifieds that's pushy is a no go.
