I've used bait for over 30 years....learned the first year DO NOT CALL at a bait because any coyote that didn't quite make it in to the bait and you shoot knows better not to come in at all....
With so many callers out now compared to years ago coyotes have been educated and just ignore calling or will sit at the woods edge and really look over the situation and many just leave you never knowing they were even there....
There stomach come February has been pretty empty and food supplies are low coyotes will use a bait over the next couple months use lot more then any time of the year....
Using a hole road kill once temperatures stay freezing works good just make sure its tied to a tree so it cannot be moved....not tied they will move it to cover so they cannot be seen....
My favorite is "deer sickles" after butchering a deer I take all scrap cut them into small fist size chunks put in a 5 gallon bucket add any blood to it then add water as hot as it comes from the tap mix it up good....then put it outside to freeze....
To get the "bait" out of the bucket bring it inside to thaw out the contains just enough so it can be dumped out one chunk....I put several sticks into the bucket then so it cannot touch the sides and refreeze...you must have tempatures that stay below freezing or the bait will be mush....
Crows and ravens will find the "deer sickle" and will squawk and talk about it letting any fox to coyote know where it is....putting the "deer sickle" with in shooting distance of a permanent deer blind that can be snuck into with out being seen makes a great set-up.....
I've been using them for over 30 years and never told anyone about them until several years ago !
