Caliber advice

I am looking for advice on caliber for a custom build.
Max range: 600yds
Game: Medium to large sized game
Rifle Specs.: Barrel length less than 26 inches (I want the rifle to be easy to maneuver and carry but hit like a hammer)

I was originally thinking 300 WM but with a barrel less than 26 in I don't think it would be a good choice. What about 300 WSM?
300 wm, 30 nosler, 33 nosler or 330 dakota. All very good rounds. Also 30 P
RC

Yeah, those Creed humpers really are a strange crowd. I heard they sit around "floggin' the dolphin" while reading creed load date lmao

But as long as they use the cartridge that was an answer without a question, it will keep more brass and ammo for the rest of us using real calibers. ;-)

What does the Creed do that a 6.5-284 cant? What about the .260 Rem, .264 Win Mag, 6.5x55 etc etc? This is a serious question, insert no sarcasam. Let me guess ,someone will call it "It is inherently Accurate"?
The 6.5 creedmoor doesn't do anything different, just marketed better.

Yikes, you did explain that. Just had a hard time imagining growing up around guys that disgusted you so much you would get turned off on their beloved 30-06.

Me: I'm going rabbit hunting
Them: use a 30-06
Me: Going Turkey hunting
Them: Use a 30-06
Me: Going to help slaughter hogs
Them: 30-06 will kill them, drain the blood, and quarter it at the same time
Me: Going deer hunting
Them: 30-06 will kill them, skin them, and damage no meat.

Ok, so I am embellishing a tad bit, but you get the idea. I have a huge respect and love for the .308 and its kids. I think the 7-08 is one of the best deer rifles in existence. Also a great youth round.!

I've been running a 5r mill spec stainless r700 in 300 wm 24" barrel and suppressed...with factory Hornady 200 gr long range precision... very accurate... low sd and es....hits whitetails and 400 lbs hogs at distance hard....dead right there results....drt preformance....very impressive for off the shelf performance... u could probably squeeze more out handloading...but still very good results

A 300 wsm would be an excellent choice. You can't go wrong. Many calibers would work.

I love to joke around, I hope no one takes me really serious (really do not like the 06 though).
Yea, the 30 06 is at the bottom of my list too. Great cartridge and versatile too. Kicked the crap out of a 16 yr old , shooting rem corelok 180s ( that would be me ). I shot that thing for 6 months, trying to get it to stay on a pie plate at 100yds . I learned how to bed an action, float a barrel, and tweak the trigger on a win 670 in the process. I wound up with a flinch that almost had me jumping off the bench before the gun would fire. Got the local gunsmith to help me get over my flinch, but never got the gun to shoot better than 5" at 100. Finally gave up on that gun , I hated that mule ! Traded it at the local gun store for a rem 788 308 carbine and a bushnell 3-9×32. The 788 shot great once I was done with the glassbed/float job, consistent sub MOA.
Went back to the gun store a little while later to grab another box of 180 coreloks for the 308. When I walked in, the owner handed me a target with a 3 shot group that was a 1 hole cloverleaf. Wow, who shot that? The guy that bought your old 06 , he said. Turned out the weaver 4k scope that came on the package deal 30 06 couldn't handle the recoil either ! Guy put decent glass on it and that store owner said it shot factory ammo better than anything he had setup for a customer to that point.
Didnt matter to me at that point.... That was 38 yrs ago and I still wouldn't have one.

I think a kimber in 300wsm or 300wm would be light and powerful....I seen a rem model 7 in 300 wsm with 20" barrel that would be light and still powerful...
Now that you mention it, I'm almost sure Ruger made a M77 Compact in .300 WSM. Can't remember if it was a MKII or Hawkeye, but it had a laminated stock.

I was correct, it had a 16.5" barrel. I have shot one, but I couldn't remember barrel length. Recoil felt like my 338 boat paddle Ruger shooting 250s.

While looking those, I fell in love with the Hawkeye Alaskan. 20 inch barrel, muzzle brake that can be swapped for a matched weight if you dont want the brake. In .338 Win Mag, that would be a helluva great hiking gun. Also made me regret I didnt get a Ruger Frontier in .325 WSM

LOL shot 1,000's of rounds through 30-06 A3-03 Springfield's with steel but plates at 13 years old and onward (5' 11" 170 lbs) hunted for years with a SPFD 03 30-06 in Fajen sporter stock with hard plastic but plate with a 4X Lyman scope older than I was ( I'm 63). That thing would shoot 1.125 inches or better at 100 yds. finally after 20 years shooting, loading and hunting with what was my old mans rifle I bought a MOD 70 Winchester Classic in 06 in 92 and put that baby in H S Precision stock with a nice cushy but pad. The 06 is a Hammer you feel the recoil and mostly you can sling a 180 gr out the muzzle at 2800 fps with H4350. But having shot 338 Win Mag and 300 Win Mag I can say unequivocally the Win Mags HAMMER you harder. Out to 400/500 yards on Elk is as far as I personally would feel comfortable shooting em with the 06. 300 Winnny mag short or belted is my vote for out to 600 yards.
