I use 20X for 'chucks and squirrels. I tend to not shoot things closer than about 250 though, to keep some breeding stock.

For my own "bargain rifle" (6.5 CM Ruger American Predator) I got an SWFA SS, 5 - 25 x 42 with FFP, mil/mil reticle and turrets, side focus and really good glass for the price.
