Bone to pick with new rifle owners - 100 yards out of the box

In our house we don' shoot past 300 yards . 1. that's the longest range we access too.
2. We practice on the ground , off sticks or on a pack. 3. We will fast walk or jog and get heart rate up. this makes a big difference. 4 . We pick a monthly date on the calendar. Rain , snow, wind, cold, heat. that's the date we shoot . We are proficient out to 300 yards.
Why we do this is respect for the animal. Less tracking or wounding of natural recourses.
We have had to pass on a few animals but the camera came out and it still was a wonderful experience.

I don't know the BC but that would be about 3 inches at a mile. Be tough to calculate hold over on long shots. You should be able to hit anything within your time zone.
I think that gun store guy was mistaken.
That wasn't a .270 Winchester, it was a new one called the .270 Creedmore.

The defining moment was when I had a S Colorado 3rd season muley tag. Trophy area.
Guy bought a 1000 yard rifle complete set up for elk. Probably spent north of 12k with Kahles scope. 2 boxes of ammo. New in box. Never shot.
Sat on a 340 bull for 3 hrs at 500 yards. Same guy that couldn't hit the 500 yard target. Outfitter let him shoot. Problem 1. Problem 2. With 3 hours to set up, thankfully he missed the entire bull. That's a 25" round area at 500 yards. F-ing 5 MOA!!!
The rifle could propably make the shot..but the shooter was not capable!

Wow
I feel it's are responsibility to are sport to at least TRY to explain are limitations, Rifle and shooter. We must understand and stress the facts to others what one knows. At the same time learn from others. Just because a cartridge is capable of killing at long ranges doesn't mean that the shooter our that firearm is capable! RANG TIME!

You have to memorize everything you can about where the game dropped. But then again, most guys hunt with a friend so that even improves things over my system.
OK. I mainly hunt in Texas, where 300 yds. is a long shot. I have lost three deer over 20 years, with two people watching the shot and even with some expert trackers following up, after the initial search failed. Distance only increases the chances of losing an animal, and I will maintain that increasing the distance increases the chances. Travel to a point where you think an animal went down can add to the confusion of the location where you think the animal went down.

I will add on to that, as yesterday was my first time shooting with my mini tripod setup, with my CA 300 win mag with the precision stock, first two shot almost through the same hole. Then made an adjustment with the Arca ball setup on the tripod, didn't quite tighten it enough, but was a good session taught me I needed to get used to the new gear before using it in the field. I believe this will be equivalent to my best bipod setups, actually easier for follow-up shots if required. The ball arca setup will go on my full size tripod as well, range time practice makes perfect or close enough for me. It was a good day.

I haven't read this entire thread but the first page indicates that my experience is relevant.

CPW has an elk dispersal (culling) program in the Great Sand Dunes. They have a 'test' that folks must pass before they're able to get invited. The test consists of two targets 12" tall x 14" wide at 200 and 300 yards. You must hit three shots each. 200 can be any position other than prone. 300 can be prone. You have three minutes to shoot all six shots without missing. You miss, you're done. They've had well over 600 shooters run through this program.

The day I did it there were 30 shooters. 7 passed. Most folks missed on the 200 yard target. CPW said that's the highest passing rate they've had by double. He said they have days with 60 shooters and zero pass.

Obviously, it's way more than the average hunter that has no business shooting an animal greater than 200 yards.

I know we all absolutely hate the government stepping in to control hunting or guns in any way, but I can't help but wish there was some basic verification like this that folks had to go through to ensure they were utterly stupid or useless when it came to hunting/shooting.

That is a HUGE target.

If someone can't hit that, they should not be allowed near a gun, much less shoot it.
A few of us were shooting yesterday in preparation for our hunt this week.
In the words of my boss, and trip leader, "If anyone here cannot consistently hit a beer can at 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards, you'll not be coming on the hunt". He even made his own wife and dad prove it, and he knows that both are extremely accurate.
We all had a good laugh when his wife said to him, " exclude me from the hunt and you will never have sex again ".

But we already knew that she is a dead on shooter, and could hit something a lot smaller than a beer can, so it was funny.

I would wager several hundred dollars that 98% of hunters could not hit a beer can at 500, even given 5 shots to try. That's 1moa tall and 1/2 moa wide.

Probably those then who only shoot 20 rounds a year.
They should be practicing more, and put 500 plus shots through their rifles a year, till they can easily hit a beer can at 500 yards.
