Bolt face diameter's

@USAF Marksman The 33 Nosler has a 0.534 rebate rim diameter like the rest of the Nosler family, short mags, etc. A magnum action should work. The bolt face won't need modification but the feed rails and mag box probably will.

Thanks for setting me straight. That's good news for me.

I feel sure JE is smiling
I started searching the web trying to find the answer last night. I decided I'd just come here and ask the pros. Low and behold, JPs thread with a sticky right at the top with the words "bolt face diameters". Couldn't have been any more perfect. There are a handful of names floating around these forums that will live forever. His is one of them...

I appreciate the info and help. As always.

We really should have a tribute JE sticky with these and many other posts in it. This info is too valuable to pass away and it would be a great tribute to the man.
I tried in 2014 >>>https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/our-fallen-members.129796/. I started one in GB in 2012. https://forums.gunbroker.com/discussion/1254956/sticky-for-the-fallen-gb-members

Perhaps, if more LRH members help me with the effort, we as a community could have a tribute to all our fallen members, similar to GB's.

Some times when considering a re barrel and chamber or cartridge change you need to know what round will work without bolt face and extractor work.

I have a cheat sheet/ready reference and thought I would share it with every anyone
that is interested.

All of these groups of cartridges should interchange without bolt face and extractor
work.( some work on receiver rails may be needed to improve feeding ).

As far as wild cats what ever the parent case was it should work in the action listed.

I know this list is not complete but it's close. I up dated the list with some of the newer cartridges to help decide.

Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .384 +/-
17 Rem, 204 Ruger. 222 Remington, 223 Rem, 20 Nosler, 22 Nosler, and 24 Nosler.

Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .470 +/-
225 Winchester, 22/250 Remington, 6mm Norma BR, 243 Win, 6mm Creedmoor, 250 Savage, 260 Rem, 6.5/284 Norma, 6.5 Creedmoor 7/08 Rem, 284 win, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 338 Federal, 35 Rem, and the 358 Winchester.

Hi I have a 350 Remington magnum in the model 673 and I have thought of getting it re barreled since ammo is so hard to find and I'm also getting recoil shy 🙂 so is it to much of a change in bolt face to get it down to a 358 Winchester or 35 rem?

You will need a new bolt and barrel, you are better off selling and building what you want.

Thanks Eddybo !!!!

The reason it's not on my list is because it is based on the old 220 russian case and falls
between the bolt face dia of .384 and .470 ( it is .445 and is to loose in the .470 face )
so you must open up the .384 to get proper extraction.

Thanks

I know this is a super old thread, but I'm on the "hunt".
I would love to have a custom takedown barrel built for either my Savage 99 in 30-30 or Savage 1899 in 303 Savage, but I would like to chamber for a 6.8 Western (same rim diameter as the 270WSM).

The rim diameter of the 6.8 Western is .535".
The rim diameter of the 303 is .505" and the 30-30 a hair larger at .506".

Is .02" a world of difference on the bolt face side ?
I'm new to this, so forgive my lack of knowledge.

Thank you in advance.

Here is a sheet that I found with much the same data.
Also one with common twist rates by caliber for factory rifles.

Thanks for the info, I have a young friend with a Savage 30/06 that wants to go with something a little flatter shooting for range work. He was considering purchasing a new rifle but is short of cash now so this will give him a way to go, lower cost. What is your recommendation for a barrel swap that will allow him 500 + range?

Mike

I would not mess around with enlarging the bolt face - hard tough steel. Lapping bolt lugs & truing up receiver ring should be done with a re-barrel job.

Also, to be considered is bolt thrust increase upon enlarging cartridge base area. Like .473 is .176 square inches vs. .532 is .222 square inches. Assuming equal pressures like, 60 K psi exerted on base of cartridge the larger area base would allow more thrust on bolt face.

If it was me I would just add a break to the 06 and start loading something in the 190 range to around 210 range with good glass and learn to dial on you scope. Might want to get a scope that is capable of dialing that holds true. I do this with a 308 and a 195 ELDM. Choose a good powder fit that works best with the heavier bullets for best performance like temp stable, speed, and accuracy. You will then have plenty for any North American game running a 200grn bullet to 500yards.
