Blood trailing in Coyote country

Hunting is only a once in a while method to make you feel like you are doing something. Trapping is 24/7.

Lot of respect for trappers. I'm just a low key trapper. Coon, possums, etc. Helped friend run his traps many years ago and saw how he did it. He got mad because I spit on the ground about 15 feet from a coyote set. I just use the dukes dog proof here around my house and hunting sites to keep coons/ possums in check for the turkeys. Got 11 so far. About to start again.

Im sure glad we don't have that issue in western Wyoming. I think it's because they prefer sheep. Easier to catch and more abundant.

Love those dog proofs…BTW they appear to be cat proof too. I've got a couple set one by the deer feeder out front and another on my walk ramp to the boat dock. Put it there a few years ago after coons ripped up the seats and life jackets in my pontoon Boat. It's attached to an 8' cable with a yellow flag to let me know I've caught another coon. The long cable insures when they fall off the ramp they'll drown. nice to not have to shoot em or use a catch pole. Just tie a rock onto them and sink them down for the catfish.

A few years ago I found a cow elk hit by a car laying on the side of the road late at night. She had her head up and looked like she'd probably survive so I didn't put her down. 6 hours later on my way back home I stopped to see if she was still there and coyotes had already cleaned up almost half of her. Must have been a pack of them but they made short work of it!

We tell our hunters to stay in sight of their blind when going after deer or hogs that they have shot. We do it for a couple reasons; so they don't get lost and two so they don't walk into another hunters area. Several weeks back we had a gentleman and his son shoot a nice 8-point with a 270 Win. The deer ran out of their sight and they followed the rules. They marked blood at the sight of the hit, trailed the buck about 150yds, and stopped when they lost sight of their blind. They then got on the cell phone and called for help.
We called in a neighbor with a tracking dog who arrived in 20mins and we were on the blood trail about an hour later. We left the dog in the truck so not to ruin the dog putting him on a deer that was alive and running and the blood trail was easy to follow.
The buck had lay down another 50yds away but after the man and his son walked back to the blind, the coyotes jumped him up and ran him to death another 100 or so yards down into the ravine. They gutted him, ate both hams, liver, and part of the back strap before we could recover him.
I've never seen them get on a deer so fast you can see in the pictures that the hunter made a great shot.
If you have hungry coyotes, get on the trail fast and stay on it.
Off season predator hunts are in order Or we won't have fawns next year.

Please tell me you have lots of yote culling in your area.

The closest thing we have to wilderness is just off my back deck. End of the Appalachian mountains here. Long leaf pine wildlife Refuge, three thousand acres of cottoqulla girl scout land and Talladega National forest,another half million acres with choccolocco wildlife management area. Another 58 thousand acres. It's starting to fill up with predators! Friend just down the road was hunting the wildlife Refuge before it became one. Was part of old Ft. McClellan. His son shot a small buck but being15 went to wait on dad. When they trailed it a mountain Lion had covered it up and was about 10 yards away watching them. It remained the property of first finder. They went back next day with Alabama game and fish people. Only hide and head remained. Guessing coyotes cleaned up what the cat left. That's about 3/4 mile in straight line from my deck.

You guys down south need to feed your coyotes better. Here in Southern California we give them unlimited house cats, small yippy type dogs and an occasional small child.

Except for the small children! Much the same. Birmingham news was whining about coyote eating pets in local communities.

Here in central Oregon there are lots of dogs. The current coyote trick is to lure the dog out with a scout coyote and then the pack attacks the dog. My back yard is forest and my trail cam picks them up in the hunt during the night. Might have to warm up my suppressed blackout.

They pull that same trick in Wyoming. I always enjoy seeing coyotes... up close with a bullet hole in them.

I saw coyote hunters on YouTube sending dogs out to draw in coyotes. Never saw a kill on the videos but they were definitely drawn into rimfire and shotgun range.

Had a similar experience with a cow elk. My hunting partner wounded one right at dark. It ran into a canyon with thick 10 yr old replanted fir trees. We followed the blood trail the next morning. We found it a couple hundred yards later. A pack of coyotes had got it first. Only hide and bones left.

They really don't have a bad bone in their bodies ... they're just doing coyote stuff. And I'm just doing me stuff, so don't get in the way.
