Best Sub $1K Action With Prefits Readily Available

Yeah Preferred Barrels or "match grade machine" makes total junk.
I bought a prefit last year that wouldn't shoot 2 moa, I sent it back for another and it was the same thing, It'd shoot 3" flyers at 100 yards and after hundreds of rounds through it I scraped the **** thing.
Don't waste your money, they're nice guys but can't make a Precision barrel to save their lives

Interesting. I've never used preferred barrels but I have had 2 MGM Encore barrels and they were hammers. It can be difficult to get an Encore to shoot under 1MOA reliably but both my 6.5-284 and 22-250 barrels were typically 1/2 MOA barrels.

I didn't know they were available for the Atlas, but I'm not keen on Preferred Barrel blanks. I seen a bore scope of a barrel and it was not impressive at all. Talk about rough! I contacted them and asked if they lapped their barrels and they said no. They didn't give me a warm fuzzy at all. I was looking at a shouldered barrel for my ARC Nucleus at the time. I have used their old company MGM and had good luck but they were using Shilen and X-caliber barrels at the time.
Check out Krieger Barrels. I've shot a few barrels on some custom builds but I feel Krieger was by far the best for me. I never had to break any of them in. They just shoot good right out of the box. Another part is when I go hunting they cold bore shots are just a accurate as the Fowled barrel. I can't even tell a difference.

I don't have any personal experience with any of the actions, but from all of my research I would say Bighorn Origin. I just ordered my first custom action and went with a TL3. Experticity has great prices for .mil on proof research prefits.

Kelby tactical, Bighorn Origin and Mesa actions are less than $1k and seem to be great actions. I have the Bighorn Origin that I'm building a 270wsm on.

Not much love for preferred barrel blanks on the forum. I've never personally used one, and now I probably never will. If they are junk I recant.

The reason I suggested it was they have a rather popular youtube content creator who shills them heavily and he seems to have good luck with them. And they make shouldered prefits for a good price. I really like the idea of shouldered prefits vs barrel nuts. Is there anybody else making shouldered prefits in the $300-$400 range?

The action is the most important part of the rifle, and effects accuracy more than many give it credit. Dont let a few hundred steer you. In the big picture its not that big of a difference. Good rule of thumb, does the company have actions winning in accuracy minded competitions?
"If someone wanted me to build him an accurate rifle, I would ask how much he had to spend, and then put 80 percent of that into the barrel. The rest I could improvise one way or another. Spend your money on the barrel." Chad Dixon, Dakota Arms

My thought exactly. I know where Alex is coming from on saying action is most important. It is the foundation of your build. But match barrels on cheap actions still seem to hammer. There is always going to be a problem child come along that needs some love but those are exceptions to the rule. I've built way too many semi custom rifles that shot fantastic with factory actions. When I say semi custom I mean it uses a factory action trued or not. I've seen bench rest guys struggle with a target rig so much they just sell them. Those normally have 1200 to 1600 dollar actions on them. Sometimes a rifle will give you fits custom or not. For a straight up hunting rig most any factory action will get the job done. If the extra money for a custom action is in your budget then do it for sure. I think most of the under 1000 dollar actions I know about have been mentioned already so really pick the one that checked all your boxes and you will be happy.

I like the tenacity, but they're only available in short actions as I recall. That leaves out2/3 of my calibers of choice.
I dont Mind a trued 700 by a trusted smith, I have a few, but the origin checks all of the boxes.

They come in long actions too.

Iv used quite a few GRB's for my builds and for some clients here in australia. All of them turned out to be shooters. Iv got a titanium GLR also in PRC which is quite nice and is my "go to".

One thing I'll pick on is the GRB's are not as slick as my defiance or even tikkas. In saying that One of them has had quite a few rounds down range now and is starting to free up so mite be a thing you can work on.

We have beat on them quite hard and not one failure or issue as of yet so +1 for me on GRB.
