Garmin rinos are awesome that's what we use between our hunting camp, we can see each other on the map and has scrambling capabilities. My other baofung and yaesu handhelds are more for emergency use, if you know your closest repeater you can use ham radio frequencies in an emergency.I use the Garmin Rino 755T pretty much takes care of everything I need. Cheers
Congrats on your ham license. The 'rubber duck' antennas can be replaced by longer/higher gain ones to increase range. A magmount antenna for the car and a slim cable can get you even more range. At 2m they are only about 18" long.Handheld radios like yaesu, icom and baofeng are good 5 watt radios depending on budget. The garmin gmrs with gps are great. Ham and GMRS are your best option for long range as you can talk on repeaters and mobile higher watt mobile style radios. So it all depends on your budget and typical use. I recently got my ham license for emergency comms and when there isn't cell coverage.
