How are you managing a 180 in a 284Win and staying in the short action? I have not had any experience with the 284W but every time I look at the chamber, it just looks like the that bullet is stuffed in the case?
I've also always been told a 6.5x284 is useless in a SA if a 140gr+ bullet is the goal. once again, no experience with either of them, but I do have a Weatherby in 30-06 and a savage in 308 that are calling for barrels.. and I really wanted to use my savage for a 284W case.

I dont own a 284win, just looking at high BC bullets that fit cartridges in a short, standard action. I know its possible and from several cartridges I own with short throats(6x45 & 300wsm) that require the bullet to be seated very deep, I know it may not be ideal but certainly possible and as someone mentioned: not worthless!

The 180eldM has a G1 BC of .792 that even if slow velocity will out preform anything 6.5, 6mm or smaller in the wind over 1000yds! Even the 162eldM at G1 .670 is pretty good.

People recommending all these small, low BC bullets(in comparison to heavy 7mm or even heavy 6.5's) is wild. I guess I am the only one that has small bullets blown around in the wind trying to shoot beyond 1000yds in gusty conditions.

The 180class 7mm bullets at G1 .792 are on par with 285gr & 300gr out of 338's. My next "light duty" Longrange rifle will find a way to launch them
to each their own Longrange brethren

I've noticed everyone recommending heavy 7mm bullets, 175, 180s... but they are superior to a 168 or 162 IF you can get them moving fast enough. Just tossed it in my calculator, 4500ft, 45deg, 10mph wind, 1000 yards:
180VLD @ 2900fps has 23.09moa and 4.47 moa of wind
168VLD @ 3025fps has 20.91moa and 4.18 moa of wind
140VLD 6.5CM @ 2800fps has 26.40moa and 5.48 moa of wind
140 VLD 6.5PRC @ 3100fps has 20.74 moa and 4.65 moa of wind

I would pick that PRC everytime, especially with 20gr less powder... now, OP cant choose a mag bolt face, but that 6.5 doesnt look bad.

The reason I suggest the SAW 7mm is reamers already designed for long throats and 180 class bullets but a 168 going faster may be best choice for that distance. As stated already, wind has a lot of influence on long light bullets at long range

Well, a lot of guys are tossing out the man bun type cartridges and fast twist 6mm's...
As I understand you need 308 bolt face, short action, and no rebated rim.
With those parameters I'd take a long hard look at modifying a 6.5x55 Swede, as it's about the fattest non rebated rim case that will fit in a 308 bolt face. If you've gotta blow it out and shorten it a bit go for it.

Alpha makes a SRP 7-08 case which is stronger, so again, 7-08Ai using Alpha SRP which can be loaded hotter, longer barrel at least 26" fast 1-8 twist should get a 168 to 3,000 or so. Basically the above is the 7mm SAW which has most of the numbers worked out.

Someone else suggested the 277 fury. I'd be tempted to try it just to be different. The hybrid cases are available from time to time at American reloading. I use them for 308. One pass through a 308 die and they're good to go. I'm sure you could make 260's out of them also.

It's an 80k psi case. Load it hard and drive the snot out of it.

277 really is too long of a case to seat heavies, but it does work well for forming 6.5 CM. I've gotten 140's up to 2820 from my 20" barrel without stepping on it too hard. You'd be fine at 1400 with a longer barrel.

This the answer. Use Alpha SRP brass and stand on it with 144 Berger LR Hybrids.

I've shot mine to 1560 yards several times.

I easily outrun the 6.5 Needmoor by 250fps on average.
