Berger 300wm ammo

Just got a box. Will update as soon as I try it

I have 10 boxes on order—along with 5 boxes of the 230 Hybrids. (I am aware the latter is a bit heavy for the Winnie.). Just call me Broz Light!

I plan to test these in my ultra-light mountain rifle with the ultra-heavy, ultra-bulky Swarovski DS wallowing around on top.

Will be some time before I can set up the range—but will report as well when I do. Hopefully, I will be able to extend the range on the small pasture I have in mind. Doubt I would EVER want to shoot game beyond 6-8 hundred.

Quite frankly, if I get lucky and can get either factoryoad to ring a 12 inch gong consistently at even 600 yards, I may order a metric ton of the stuff and give up handloading for the caliber entirely. If I can get it to do so with a 10 inch gong, I may sell my old pickup truck and use the cash to buy Berger.

In any case I wish Berger also offered the same two bullets in .300 RUM.

Best regards,

Russ

From personal experience I'd say you probably won't enjoy the 230's in the UL.

Try Len's recoil calculator and you'll see what I mean.

Give Berger some time. In order to get their money back on development companies almost always start with the most popular/fastest selling calibers and then slowly expand out from there because that's what they can sell in the highest volume and the fastest.

Understood, Wildrose. And Lord knows, the Win is far more widespread than the RUM.

You are also correct about the recoil and I have to admit being something of a recoil wuss.

Shot pretty good for me at 100. Please notice that the bigger black dot near the center was the sharpie mark that I was shooting at, not a bullet hole. I did not measure these, but I would guess about 1/4 moa or less in the center. The top right group has a flyer that I pulled. (I'm not the best marksman. Lol) Anyways, I was more than highly impressed from a rifle that I put together myself and hasn't even been broken in or even bedded yet! I could only imagine what it could do if someone with a steady hand were sitting behind it. Both were only 3 shot groups, and barrels vary in what they like, but this is the most consistent factory ammo that I have seen in my 30 or so years of experience shooting. I've had very few handloads perform better. As I said, each barrel seems to have a preference, but I suggest picking up a box to try at least. Very consistent ammo!

Seems like most people who have shot it get great accuracy, especially for factory ammo. To the point where handloading is nearly pointless. I haven't found any in stores near me. I guess I will have to order some. What velocities are you getting? Is it close to listed velocity?

I have not chronographed it yet. I almost wish that I had waited before I bought my 300wm dies and some 230's. I doubt my handloads would be any better. I had to buy mine from midway USA.

I think if you do a search, Broz or someone else did a very favorable write up on the ABM 215s a few years back. I have 4 boxes but have not shot any as I am using my own 215 reloads with too much success to motivate me to try anything else. The ABM ammo was my inspiration to try a COAL close to 3.60 inches. I had been using longer and the change shorter worked out great in my GAP 300 WM. I'm using H1000 and RL26 and getting velocities similar to the published ABM 215 results so I would expect similar results as my COAL is also very close.
You should note the longer than SAMMI COAL though because some factory rifles probably won't take the ABM ammo without a serious jam fit that could cause safety problems.

Will: Doggone it, man, you gotta quit using those high-dollar targets!:) My step-father would just slop a glop of paint on a live oak--none of that expensive cardboard for him!

I too would like to know the velocity on those--please post results here when you do chronograph them.

Best regards,

Russ
