Hello, as my handle reflects I am a Wyoming guy. Born, raised, and stayed here for 65 years. I retired from law enforcement last year after serving for 32 years. My area of operation, Fremont County has been a kind of refuge for retired Leo's for years. The place is changing but it is still the only place I want to be. The most common complaint I hear about transplants is that they are fleeing where they are from because of what it is or become but then try to make the new place what they just left. I can't tell you how many times in my career I heard, "Well back in California what they are doing is a violation of this code or that code. " A big part of what has made us who we are is a self sufficient attitude and a desire for the least amount of regulation not more. Now for the bad, our area is some of the finest rock climbing and backcountry hiking in the world. The politics is rapidly converting to a much more liberal mentality by those young people moving here to enjoy those venues. All the above said, give Wyoming a thought and if you choose us, welcome brother.

You would be welcome in Alabama , You will have to travel back west for anything other than Deer , Turkey or Hogs but lots of whitetail . There are high fence places for elk and other species , but nothing trumps out west hunts

Dont forget Alaska
Alaska is not for everyone. The long-term winters the darkness will get to many, you need to be a year around outdoors person to survive here. And, yes, I have lived here for forty years, originally from California a state I left in 1968 when I joined the Army that brought my butt to Alaska...from Fairbanks/North Pole to Eagle River to Anchorage, Alaska to Palmer and now Wasilla Alaska area twenty years now. It is a very RED state.

That elected Merkowski! Guessing because the rugged individuals don't vote...

Okay, I will just own this fact that I am a 4th gen Californian, but all generations have been Reagan style conservatives and are from rural CA. With that said, I just retired from Law enforcement and am looking for a safe semi rural place to raise my family. Gun rights are paramount, good big game hunting, and the ability to be left alone. I mind my own business, and don't ever want to turn the place i move to into California. Every state I look at, it seems they are not far from becoming blue. I lived in NV and would not even consider it now since the libs have a super majority there, with Reno and Vegas controlling the state.
Idaho would be my choice. I lived in Salmon for 8 years and loved it. I still own land there although my wife doesn't like the winters or distance from family.

For the three people that are still reading this...

There are approximately 330,000,000 people in the USA. Various polls show that between 42% and 30% of the population owns at least ONE firearm. Going with the lowest estimate, that would mean that approximately 110,000,000 people own a firearm in the USA. (To own a firearm legally you must be at least 18 years of age, so these are LEGAL AGE VOTING ADULTS.)

To put this in perspective, only 138,000,000 people voted in the 2016 election (for president, the senate, and congress). If ALL 110,000,000 gun owners would have gotten off the couch and cast a vote for the PRO-GUN candidate, the Senate and House would have been stacked with pro-gun legislators.

Gun owners CAN take back this country. But people have to VOTE and vote for the PRO-GUN candidate. If we could pull this off for even one presidential election cycle, politicians would take notice and realize 'gun-bans' and 'gun-restrictions' are a losing proposition.

But gun owners HAVE to vote. We could DOMINATE an election if everyone with a .22LR firearm sitting in the closet would get out – AT LEAST ONE ELECTION – and vote for the pro-gun candidate. If you are pro-gun and don't vote, I love ya but YOU are the problem! GET OUT AND VOTE PRO-GUN and we can OWN our country again. We have the numbers. People just need to wake up and realize what's at stake. VOTE! Please?

To the topic at hand: Hello OP! If you are pro-gun/pro-liberty, PLEASE move to Texas! We need all the 'good' guys we can get. You can hunt EVERYTHING here, I swear. You don't even need to go to Africa; most of their animals are here somewhere. Live the dream!

I used to live in WA and saw it get 'flipped' by the anti-freedom folks. Then I lived in CO and saw it get 'flipped'. I use to live in NM, and now it is getting 'flipped'. It's heartbreaking. TX is on the verge. All pro-gun, pro-liberty folks are WELCOME!

That reminds me of some stats I learned last year:
1/3rd of Americans are under 18.
1/3rd of Americans are on some kind of welfare, or retired.
AND ONLY
1/3rd of Americans are tax-payers!
Sound the Alarm! :D

I'm also a generations deep Californian and this will be the first year I will not be purchasing a hunting license here. I'm done with it here.

If it weren't for my kiddos, I would be in Wyoming. But Idaho and some parts of Montana are worth looking into. Same with Texas... Colorado, Nevada and Utah are past the point of no return.
Utah?? very surprised to hear that.

Ga is a good choice too. Of course, I say that because I'm born and raised here. Lot of diversity of topography, but requires a little bit of travel to see it all. We have coastline , swamps, farmland, and mountains. Big game is way less diverse than out west, but some are recovering, like the black bear that is really making a comeback. Florida cougar sightings are on the rise, but not officially considered to be a population in Ga. We have a great whitetail herd with quality deer management the rule more than the exception these days. Hogs run rampant and are legal to hunt year round and at night . The wild Turkey population is great . Coyotes are a problem in some areas, but are year round and night legal, just like hogs. The fishing is great too. From rainbow and brown trout in the north, to jumbo largemouth in central and south Ga , pan fish gallor everywhere, and a great coastal saltwater fishery.
People are friendly enough, but we have lost the wave to every passing car mentality I remember as a younger person. There are plenty of areas in the state that are pure backwoods living. Stay away from the I-75 corridor down the center of the state and life still crawls like 100 yrs ago.
Weather? We dont have any, really. Summers are hot, fall is great, winter is mild .
All in all, a great place to hunt, fish, and live at the pace you want to.
