barrel removal

anyone ever try and remove a barrel from a Cooper model 22 it a single shot bolt gun. a gun builder a few years ago tried to remove it so he could tread the barrel for a brake. he said he could not get it loosened and was afraid he might tweak the action. I want to have it re-bored by Jes any suggestions? do not want to mar up the barrel. thanks

Just wanted to chime in about Cooper Rifles. We bought two Cooper Model 22 Single Shot Phoenix in .260 Rem. years ago before the Company was sold and relocated. The had the B&C Stock in the "Spider Red" on Black with 26" SS Satin Barrels. When they were first out they came with a 1:9 twist for the .260 Rem and extremely accurate with 140 gr SGK or 142 gr SMK. Also back then they had a program if you shot out a Barrel they would replace it for $80.00. Well we had one that we shot a lot and another one that was a Safe Queen and never shot. One day I called up Cooper and asked if we could get the barrel replaced because we wanted the 1:8 twist instead of a 1:9 for heavier bullets. The Customer Service Rep said send it in and they would put a new 1:8 barrel on it. Now this was the one Cooper that we never shot. We sent in the rifle and was charged $80.00 for the new 1:8 barrel. The Rep told us that when he put the newer barrel on the Model 22 and Proof Shot it, that it was the most ACCURATE Rifle that he tested at Cooper. It Shot in the same hole. Well long story is that we kept the one Model 22 that we shot a lot and then this new one with a 1:8 we sold to a LRH Member. Wish we would have kept it!!!
Try contacting Cooper and see if they still have their Barrel Replacement Program with the New Cooper. Might be worth getting a NEW Barrel from Cooper other than trying to get a re-barrel done.

when the new company took over Cooper (night Hawk I think) reported that they would not honor any warranty of the old company, I don't even think they have made any rifles. this barrel I have on mine is a 6.5-284 and shoots 1/4 inch groups at 300 yards when the wind is not blowing and I can do my part. just want to rebore it to a 9.3x62. I think at this time I will just find a clunker model 700 and redo it

When I contacted Glenn at Nighthawk this week about a barrel change on an existing cooper this is the response I received:
