Got to hunt cow Elk with my Dad a couple weeks ago. My dad has never elk hunted and only tried to deer hunt as a teenager but never succeed. I have been trying to do more stuff with him and he likes the hunting we have done so far.
Met up with our guide the first afternoon and zeroed our rifles and did a little scouting. Met up the first morning and got right to it. We chased a few groups of cows till around 11. We spotted a bull two ridges over and quickly saw 3 cows on his tail. We got posted up on a rock pile at the end of a ridge and got on glass. Eventually the 3 cows came out of the wash but stayed under cover. I really wanted my dad to get his cow first but he was not comfortable at the range they were at. I got on the rifle and when I had a clean shot I made it happen at 763 yards. She walked about 15' and collapsed within a few seconds. We humped down to retrieve the cow and packed it out to the trucks.
Second day was an 18 hour day in the field. Most of the day we covered a ton of ground in the trucks with not one elk to be seen. Then I spotted 10+ cows and a few bulls. We came up with a plan and hiked up another Ridgeline across from them. Everything worked perfect and we were able to get my dad prone to take a shot. He was not comfortable the first day at 763 yards so luckily his was at 753 yards, Haha! I think him seeing me do it and laying next to him doing all his data and wind calls helped his confidence ti get the job done. Spent about an hour hiking over to the other ridge and another 30 minutes to find the elk. We dressed it out in my Tricer game bags and hiked out.
We both ended up shooting my 300wm with 215 hybrids at 3000fps. Super stoked to be with my dad on his first big game hunt and proud of him for making a 753 yard kill shot!
