Law enforcement runs serial numbers all the time to find owners. Thats were I would take it if no one claims it soon. You cant just run it and find the owner.. would have to be reported lost or stolen to give a hit on that serial number in NCIC/LEDS.
How do you know it wasn't used, just saying. From the ATF website-
Firearm tracing provides critical information to assist domestic and international law enforcement agencies investigate and solve firearms crimes; detect firearms trafficking; and track the intrastate, interstate and international movement of crime guns. All firearms traced must have been used, or suspected to have been used, in a crime.
That might be true for the ATF, but the FBI actually runs NCIC. There is a file within NCIC specifically for 'lost' items (as well as firearms and anything else with a serial number/VIN number) and it is automatically queried when a serial number is checked through NCIC. We check firearms all the time without any preconceived notions of their 'histories'.All firearms traced must have been used, or suspected to have been used, in a crime.
Yes, I told him that's where to go first. That's the first place I would go to look for my rifle if this happened to me.Bob, perhaps AZGFD could help. Give them a call and possibly the owner has reached out to them.
