Have to throw another vote in for the 12.5" Grendel pistol. I built a 10.5" Grendel SBR which has worked great on deer and hogs out to 200 yards but I wish I had gone a little longer to stretch that range out. I've been using the 123gr SST's but have been curious enough about the 90gr Speer to give them a try on my next outing. I can't recommend Precision Firearms enough for your barrel. Mark does a great job if it's precision you are looking for. I'm expecting a 22 Grendel barrel at my door any day now!
My buddy has a stag 6.8 spc and it's by far the most accurate factory rifle I've ever seen shooting factory ammo, I know you want to build but one of their uppers may save some guesswork. Best wishes
6.8 excels in short barrels, and particularly 12.5". Makes for a great truck gun and just hammers hogs. 68Forums has tons of folks with many tons of hog experience in short barrelled 6.8 SPC
If I was building a pistol it would be a 6.8 spc and I'd rifle I would build a 6.5 grendel. I've got both and they both shoot quite well.
The mdws cartridges are all impressive if you want to build a wildcat but keep in mind that some of them require neck turning and annealing when forming brass, it's not hard to do but if you are not tooled up for it you want to be aware before you jump in.
Definitely 6.5 Grendel. Great round... killed plenty of deer with off the shelf Hornady 123 SST's. Odinworks barrel and handguard, Geissele 2 stage trigger with Trijicon Mk3 hunter thermal scope. Nice tack driver
For something completely different and shots up to 300 yds but very accurate 200 yds and less.... 350 Legend.
I built this rifle last winter and put on a 16" BCA upper. Wasn't expecting much from an economy upper but it LOVES the 180gr Winchester Deer Season ammo. This is 4 shots at 100 yds.
Dumped this buck at approximately 70 yds.
We don't have wild hogs this far north but from what I have read elsewhere, this cartridge does a number on them. Options are good...
I built a light weight upper in 25x68 using an 18" BHW (black hole weaponry) barrel with 3-land poly rifling. This is a 6.8 SPC case necked down to accept 25 caliber bullets, my fastest load was an 80gr Barnes TTSX ran 3205fps thu my CHRONY. The 90 grain Sierra's are considered ideal but the Barnes ran faster. If hand loading is your cup of tea then this may be a viable option.
Go with the 6.5 Grendel.
Built mine with a aero precision upper lower combo and a lilja barrel.
Sub moa with factory hornady ammo.
Has dropped 2 deer this year right where they stood.
No recoil and affordable to shoot.
