Anyone hunting subsonics for hog?

I have been contemplating setting something up but most subsonic ammo does not seem like a very good option unless hunting under 50 yds. Seems like the best choice is either 450 bushmaster or 45/70 but still limited to 100yds or less which is the majority of my shots anyway. Looks like 45/70- gets a slight nod but there is a much larger list of options for 450 bushmaster and ammo is slightly cheaper. I already have a 45/70 but would need to be threaded which I won't do. Its a ruger #3.

I've used Lapua subsonic .308 to drop a number of hogs when I was in SC. All shots were within 50 - 75 yards, but were very effective. I forget the ballistics, but after a certain yardage the bullet basically falls off a cliff in terms of drop. I was hunting small clearings in pine forests, so it worked well for me.

I wouldn't hesitate to use subsonic .308 again.

I was using 308 and it works. I shifted to the 300 Bo for a little more accuracy. It is my subsonic so it is slow version of Longrange hunting. Makers and cavity back bullets

That doesn't seem right. Are you shooting subsonics in your 308 and supersonics in your 300 blackout? I shoot both those rounds, but have never tried subsonic in 308. Subsonics in 300 blackout is fun, but I've been shooting supersonic with 110 CX bullets, that's a solid 200 yard gun on hogs. I have 8.6 blackout, but won't be able to take it out before July when the new season starts out west. Hoping that the 185 or 210 grain supersonics will be an even better hog gun that will easily reach out to 400+ yards. This is just scratching the surface of long range hunting, IMO.

I shot both in both guns. Limited powder availability and larger case capacity made it harder for consistency beyond 100 yards with 308. If trailboss was still available I think subsonic in 308 would be better. I was good to 100yrd with VV tin star but they have discontinued it too

Thanks

Sooooo, if I get the gist of some of the responses……my wife and I should do fine on hogs with our hunting rifles using cast bullets @ 1500 to 1800 mv.
Hers: 338 WM running a 220 grain cast
Mine: .375 AI running a 285 (ish) grain cast

Survey says! 😁

The 450 Bushmaster is "death" on hogs. My son shot a 500+ pounder on one and the hog never knew what hit it. It was DRT without any leg kicking or motion at all.

Survey says ...get a creed 🤣 . Just kidding. I only hunted with subsonics once, killed two Hogs, under 50 yards, 300 Blackout shooting subsonic reloads 208 grain from Freedom Munitions. That was a few years ago.

Ours won't be sub sonic, but am hoping that with the bullet sizes, weights, and velocities ….they would be lethal if properly placed! memtb

I once built a 308 pistol with a 10.5" barrel. I thought it was also fun to shoot, but not something I would take hunting. In that pistol I only shot supersonic, though. I don't want to mislead you, but I ended up selling the barrel and buying a 24" 308 barrel that is now in that upper. A great hunting rifle, but an LR-308 with a 24" barrel is on the heavy side.

Yes my 308 had a 26" heavy barrel and it shot 1" groups subsonic but after a couple years I wanted more. This year I started experimenting with the 300bo and so far I have not had a chance to go beyond 150 yrds. It has potential

Thanks
