Any bad experiences with 175 gr Berger Elite Hunters on Elk

I used the 175 Elite Hunter in mt 28 Nosler this year on Elk , he didn't go thirty feet . This is what we found , it's one of three I hit him with , 267 yards .

Welcome to LRH.

Have you ever hunted Elk, and what is your max range. And do you like a exit hole or do you want the bullet to deliver all its energy inside the animal.
The more information we have we can give you little better information.
Good Luck on your hunt. 👍
Thanks for asking. Yes. I have hunted and taken bulls for three years now. All those were with a 280 AI shooting 150 gr TTSXs. My first year I was really only comfortable shooting 300 yds. I shot my bull at just over that. The second year I was comfortable going to 400 yds. I wound up shooting my bull at 460 :). I got talked into it. This last year I was comfortable to 450 and shot mine at 410.

I just switched to a 7mm PRC and have been working up loads. With the accuracy I am seeing with the elite hunters, I would be inclined to say 500 yds if shooting from a solid position.

I am kind of indifferent to the pass thru question. I want the animal to drop.

If the 175 are shooting good for you, I say go for it.
And again have a great time and hunt. 👍

I'll go ahead and lay a 100.00 bet on the table that no pictures happen to exist of this 1" penetration and also the shot that only broke the surface of the skin?
I can see it happening in a 28 if the throat is getting rough and it's pushed, at the end of life I'll be shooting 180 targets with the heavy jacket to keep from stressing the hunting jacket so hard it becomes a varmint bullet.

Ya I can see jacket separation causing penetration issues but 1"? That isn't even realistic or possible. The most frangible varmint bullets are going to penetrate quite a bit more than that. They might come completely apart but the pieces of frag are going a lot deeper then 1". You could hit flesh with a spitwad weighting 175 grains going 3000 fps and I'm pretty sure it's going to penetrate more then 1".

I always hear these 1" penetration Berger stories but I have yet to see a single picture of one.

Because if it was only an inch the animal wouldn't die so no picture. I have been unable to reclaim any berger bullets used to take animals because of complete pass through. I was running the 175s at 3150 and hit shoulder and still went all the way through

Well I'm just assuming that all the 1" penetration story animals were recovered or how else would they know that was the total penetration? This one in question was recovered but I bet pics weren't taken of the wound.

Hey all. I have worked up a pretty good 7mm PRC load that I am considering using for next fall's elk hunting. That load uses the 175 gr Elite Hunter. I haven't really shot much of the Berger offerings previously, but have seen suggestions that they sometimes just don't work as intended. Have any of you personally had or seen any bad experiences? If so, at what range or impact velocity?

Thanks.
Welcome to the forum from the free republic of Florida. Not too many negative reviews on Bergers. I load 168's for my son's 7mag and is quite impressive ballisticaly as well as devastating on deer and hogs. To see the 7PRC separate itself from the .280AI is a little down range from where your shooting. 650-700 yards where it starts to separate in terms of taking game. Keep us posted
