I've had builds go anywhere from 6 months to three years. My regular smith does outstanding work but he's a small shop and my last couple of builds went on entirely too long. Particularly frustrating when I saw other people who started builds after mine get their rifles before me. Won't do it again.
If I want a custom rifle built to my spec's now I'm going to GAP, LRI, Rbros, TS Customs and the like who in my experience quote realistic build times.
As of late my last three customs were ready built rifles (two GAP's and a APR) that came close to what I would have spec'd anyway, shoot lights out, and I didn't have to endure a protracted wait.
