Is it shooting the first two consistently together
Is it shooting the first two consistently together
not consistently. The first time (couple weeks ago), that's exactly what it was doing. first 2 would be great, 3rd would be 2" left. That was 2 diff powder charges. I was really hopeful that it was just barrel heat and that they were actually good loads. Is it shooting the first two consistently together
That's really interesting, and good to know. wonder why that happens? i'm too much of a newb to have an idea.Very nice. Now run that same load out to 300 yards and see what you get. I had a very nice group at 100 and 200 yards, but it opened up significantly at 300 in my 7 STW. I shot the 177 Hunter that same day to make sure I wasn't the weak link, and it shot great groups. So, I'm sticking with the 177 Hunter. I had the same issue with the 140 Absolute compared to the 143 Hunter in my 280AI.
What primer are you usingnot consistently. The first time (couple weeks ago), that's exactly what it was doing. first 2 would be great, 3rd would be 2" left. That was 2 diff powder charges. I was really hopeful that it was just barrel heat and that they were actually good loads.
so to test my 'barrel too hot' theory, yesterday i loaded up those same 2 recipes, and let the barrel cool between individual shots. in one case shots 1 and 4 were touching, but 2 and 3 were on either side for a 2+" horizontal string. Load 2 produced the first 2 shots touching but the third was again 2" or so left.
My 6.5c was a little more finicky with the 123 AH's that i was hoping, but the last 2 range trips have been solidly 1/2"-3/4" which makes me happy.
I have some 162 AH's I could try in the weatherby; but I'm going to try 4955 with the 178's before i switch bullets.
I don't know the answer and sent an email to Steve about it. My guess is since the bearing surface area of the Absolute line is different than the Hunters. Sometimes your gun just doesn't love the bullet you want to feed it. I also think the twist rate and the higher velocity may play a role here. I have a 1:9 twist in my 280AI and minimal twist for the 140 AH is 1:9.25. It may just not stabilize the bullet enough in this case. We are finding that it's better to have a much faster twist rate for the Absolutes than to be closer to minimum twist rate. That's really interesting, and good to know. wonder why that happens? i'm too much of a newb to have an idea.
Try the 177 Hunter if the 172 AH doesn't work well.makes sense. i built the new 7mag with a 1:8" which is what is receommended for the 172's. I have some 155AH's as well if the 172s don't stabilize at longer range. we shall see...
