8mm Thread

I'm thinking Cutting Edge is the only option for a good high BC long range bullet. Maybe Matrix? So I would plan for the long mono which i figure will probably need at least an 8 1/2" twist. 8 would be safer.
Would swaging down .338 pills be an option? Barnes at one time would swage down 338's to .330 for the wesley richards... would another .007" be a deal breaker??

Ok, I have to say it's about **** time this caliber was recognized a viable long range alternative!

When I was in junior high, I read and article in Guns & Ammo about Ross Seyfried's idea of the perfect one gun arsenal. His ideal was a .340 Weatherby. His reasoning was that in a pinch it could be used at either end of the spectrum; light game and in some places where legal for dangerous game. I bought that, but a .340 Weatherby was way out of my price range in junior high. So I started researching, reading, and digging. I came across the write up in the Llyman handbook about loading the 8mm RM, and I was hooked. Almost .340 energy, but something I could maybe afford someday.

The I read an article Craig Boddington wrote about the round in G&A. As I get older I don't agree with everything he says, but then to me he was as much of a gun god as Elmer. The 8mm RM was his holy grail.

I got my first one when I was about 21. My parents made a bunch of money selling a house and graciously passed the wealth. Quickly I found that factory loading sucked; much like throwing a brick off a building. But I guessed it would be that way; I paid $10 a box to the guy at the gun counter at Longs Drugs for 3 boxes that I'd seen sitting there for 2 years. Early on factory 8mm RM loads were strictly used for fire formed brass. (Good luck finding a box of factory for under $75 now.) I had been using Sierra GKs in my 7MM RM for a while, and wouldn't you know it the 220Gr 8mm GKs had an awesome BC. 5 something off the top of my head.

I used the max load that Sierra said was safe, 79.5Gr of H4831 (Grandpa was a big proponent of surplus powder). ****. Kicked like a mule. 1/2 in groups at 100 yards. I could easily hit the 500 yard gong at the range. I was sold.

I took a buddy out shooting one time and brought the 8 mag. He was impressed, and bruised. I remember sometime later he was talking to a friend who was spouting off about 9mm stuff. My friend said "Well, he's got an 8 Mag" Other guy says well 9mm is bigger. My friend said "you have no idea." Ignorance.

In any case I learned a lot over the years. 1. Don't shoot antelope sized game with an 8 Mag and 200Gr Partitions. I shot one front to back at about 400 yards and there was one little hole going in and one little hole going out the back end. 2. Sierra GKs are absolutely devastating. The most memorable kill was a 300lb + Muley buck at about 300 yards. Absolutely flattened.

The 8mm Rem Mag is my go to rifle for any hunt. It will do small, and it will do big. Widley makes a 250Gr solid that I stick in the bottom of my magazine just in case.

I bought a 30" finish Lilja factory contour bbl that this winter I'm going to screw onto a remmy factory action and make an international rifle. It's going all over the world with me. I'm hoping for around 3000Fps with the 220Gr SGKs. But in any case I know I will "Have enough gun."

What's actually about the American wildcat 8 mm – 06 and the European 8 x 64S?! lightbulb Both perform between the 8 x 57IS and the 8mm RM, 8 x68S. These cartridges could be a promising entrance into the 8 mm community for those who want to hunt larger game at long – range distance without too much recoil, costs, etc.

If I remember correctly, (as I threw away my notes) I was thinking I could push a 225-230 at around 3400 fps, which would out do the 338 lapua 250 berger.

The 8mm-06 is an interesting cartridge but just doesn't have the capacity to go much beyond 500-600 yds with expansion velocity of about 1800 fps, especially with the available low BC bullets. With say a 220 gr mono with a higher BC that range might be extended 100-200 yds.

Even the 8mm RM or Mud's Tiatan would be hard pressed to get 1000 yds with a .6 BC bullet which currently doesn't exist.

Big cases, RUM and larger, with custom made monos are really the only way to go if we wnat to get to 1K with expansion velocity for hunting. For general shooting we can ad another several hundred yards before going transonic.

Matrix probably wouldn't care to invest in the 8mm as he would have to buy new dies ($$$$).

I don't see why a guy couldn't swage a bullet down... but, I am NO bullet guru. Maybe Rich will chime in for us.

Cutting Edge is still where it's at. Mark, do you remember when that fella passed along that twist rate calculator for monos? Was that the dude from GS?

We could probably get pretty close with this ^^^^

Tyler,

That's an interesting calculator but we don't have any dimensions yet.

If we just use the CEB 338 300 gr, I think we can wag the twist close enough for now. It has an SD of .375 A .323 250 gr bullet would have an SD of .342 and a 260 gr would be .356 The 338 300 gr bullet requires an 8 1/2" twist so that should be plenty for a 323 250 or 260 gr bullet, maybe even a 270.

I am thinking just get a 12"- 8 1/2" gain twist and see how long a bullet it will stabilize and go from there.

A big ole Berger 8mm 250 Hybrid with a .7xx to .8xx BC would be nasty...

Maybe we can help sway them. Like I said, if Berger will produce that bullet, I will have the Titan wildcat made, and will shoot the crap out of it, too.

For this price, I will order a barrel...

Come on Berger!

Mud,

It would be nice if Berger made some 8mm pills but it ain't gonna happen. They have been promising the new 270 and 284 EOL's now for over 2 years. Best hope for a high BC cup and core is Matrix.

Also, the 250 size bullet is probably going to be on the large size for the Titan. Kinda like trying to shoot a 300 out of a 338 WM. It cam be done but MV is going to be low. Big bullets need big cases.

I should have added that an inquiring mind can look at a 338 CEB & basicall downsize the dimension :D You figured out where I was going with that. We can use everything measurement from ogive to boat tail to OAL, it'll just be a wee-bit lighter  That should give us a good idea of what the twist requirements will be.

If you do get with Bartlein on that, get in touch with me. There just might be 2 barrels on that order form.

If I do order a barrel, it will be a while. The budget is pretty much set for a while :)

But I definitely like this idea. I had plans for a 30/338 LM Imp after the 270 Montana but the 8mm will take priority.
