The STW is faster. But, not by much. Advantage of 7-300 are OAL and unlimited sources for good, cheap, brass. My next 7MM will be a 7-300 if I build another 7.

I'm not a 7mm fan, but there are 'better' cartridges than either.
It boils down to what action length you want.
If it were me, I would choose a Nosler over either of those, and the RUM only lasts around 600 rounds.

Seems Belts are just out of style. The 28 Nosler will not beat the STW, no matter what the latest reloading manuals say. There are 7-300 loads that nearly equal both. I have sold two 7 STW's and one 300 RUM when brass became unavailable/ Learned my lesson. I now have another RUM and a lifetime of brass. If I bought a 28 I would make absolutely sure I also bought enough brass to outlast the gun. And brass for it is expensive. Is the extra costs worth 50fps to you? No argument here if you feel it is. the 7 RUM just might be too much of a good thing. If an STW won't do it the 7RUM won't either and you need a bigger gun IMO.

It's not the fact that belts are out fashioned, it's the fact that the fatter shorter round can be loaded long and still fit the mag and the fact that little powder space is encroached upon.
I DO NOT OWN a single WSM, SAUM or RUM or Nosler.
Every magnum I own has a belt, except the 505 Magnum Gibbs.
I have built 3 STW's on Model 70 S/S actions, 1 358 STA and a couple 6.5 STW's.
Have also built a 25 Pronghorn (25-300WSM) that were all fizzles. Pressure rose faster than the bullets could out-run.
Hence my comment about 'better' cartridges that are more efficient in velocity per grain of powder used. I know the Nosler won't beat the STW, nor will it beat the RUM, but those 2 ARE inefficient for powder burned and velocity obtained.
By all means, build a STW, it's still a great cartridge.

The STW is faster. Closest competitor to the STW is the .28 Nosler, and they are ballistic twins. The RUM only gains 25-50 FPS over them, but uses about 20gr more powder and has about half the barrel life.
The Nosler's only advantage is the length. It's shorter, but fatter, so capacity is ****-near identical, and it fits inside a standard 700 mag box a lot easier. The STW is a bit on the long side. For it to be shot efficiently it will be way too long for a standard magazine box. You will need to either shoot it single-shot, or have a smith install a 4.000" Wyatt's extended mag box.

I was astonished at the popularity rise of cartridges that didn't seem to fill a niche...they were simply created to create something. I do think that the nosler being shorter and fatter was a wise creation.....anyway, thanks for the response guys.

The 7x300 is an easy wildcat for those that care to. My 7x300 runs a 175 eld-x at 3150, I have a good friend that shoots 180 berger vld's at 3130, but I have 2" of barrel on him. They're close. If you have an extended mag for the stw, it will beat the 7x300 with the heavier class bullets. I don't like chasing brass around, so I went with the 7x300. There are a few options that get you in the same ball park.
