7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Let me say this,I have taken a few large 170-190 lb whitetail in this area with the 120TTSX at the load I posted.I have NO complaints as one was at 325+ they fell like they were pole axed.Barnes is my second favorite game bullet they just tend to make a little more pressure. At the speed the 7STW sends the 120TTSX the equation of hypovolmeric shock comes into play.Tissue and live critters just fold under those conditions.........

Thanks for the info Duramax. It appears that load may be a lil lite for what i'm searching for, but I do not doubt your success with it. Nice to know it will shoot that grain bullet.

I do have to agree with Butter Bean on the 160ish bullets, that is where the stw is at its terminal best.I load 100gr. Partitions for my wife's .243 compact handi rifle.Win. nickel case fed lrm primer 42grs. 7828ssc 100gr.nosler Partition.Have yet to see one get out the food plot, that was shot with it.........Double +1 for the partitions.........I just like the super speed and performance the 116gr. GS Custom gives me,coyote and deer with the same round.......................

Well guys this will serve as my virgin post to LRH and the stw crew as well, but i've got one on the way tomorrow from Red Hawk Rifles. :D I reside in TN and really haven't had the need for such a large round until i drew both a mule deer & antelope tag for WY this year.

The gun is a basic 700 frame 26" 1:9.25 twist put in a B&C stock with just a little tlc (trigger / floatjob) and sent to me. I'm looking to put a 4-16 vortex viper hs on it, would that be a good choice?

Also do you guys have any load reciepes you would rec or want to share? Keep in mind i'm leaning more towards something that will buck the high crosswinds i may face out there 150gr+. Thanks in advance and GOD BLESS. J R
We've been whacking goats , white-tails, and mulies with the 7stw for a long while out here in N.D.. My dad has killed a couple of dozen critters with 79 rl22 and a 140 sierra pro hunter. I've been using 82 rl25 and a 140 nos a-bond. Both are with 215's and will net around 3400 fps. If you are stuck with rem brass(you will be unless you found a fairy to get you a few hundred win brass) you will likely need to drop those a grain or so. Shoot lower charges first of course. The 140's are .4 to .5 bc bullets already and will go through anything you put 'em into. I wouldn't use heavier unless you want to pitch a thin-skinned match bullet at critters or you are getting into elk/moose with it. I've worked with rl25 and the barnes 171 match, but I just don't know right now.

Hey Monzola,Welcome to the club......The rig your getting sounds like a shooter,What barrel contour is it by the way....There's lots of good info here if you wanna look back thru it But as I have said before the Barnes bullets are giving great results with me and quite a few of the Fellers here....The 140 TSX with 79.4gr of RL22 Is an awesome load but may be have to be tweaked to your barrel contour, The 140gr Combined Tecnology is also great bullet for that size of critter and of couse the Nosler Partition is always a no brainer 7STW is having some great loads with RL25 and the 140's and H-1000 is also a good powder for the 140's......Just let us know what you have on your mind and Im sure we can come up with something ........Welcome Aboard and congrats on your new Rig

Congrats and welcome to the Brotherhood!

I think you'll be very pleased with your rifle from Red Hawk Rifles.

I think this 7mm STW that Red Hawk Rifles currently has on GunBroker would be an awesome 7mm STW rifle!

I was wondering what the free bore is in your chambers, in other words can you touch the lands when loaded from the magazine?
nope, I can't with mine. .100" off the lands at max. length with the 171 Barnes at 3.685", and I don't know and don't care with the 140 loads(140 sierra with rl22 and 140 accubond with rl25) but I'd guess .200" off the lands. I want a bit of freebore with the stw. It smooths out the bullet slamming into the rifling's pressure spike somewhat. I honestly can't say that I've put a bullet out to the rifling in a 7mmstw.

Thanks, just the reply I was hoping for as I have some of the HV GS bullets I wanted to try and the space to the lands is huge, at least for what I'm used to.

Truc, as with any of the super mags, the STW is no exception to having free bore. It does, however seem to have less then some. The ultra mags have been known to have as much as .250-.270 free bore. Without the free bore, the velocities that we get would not be possible, without huge pressure spikes, or even at all. That was the Weatherby secret. A lot of people really get hung up on free bore, for the MISCONCEPTION that the ogive MUST be near the throat to shoot well. NOT true, and has been proven countless times. I shoot all of mine at box length, and have NO accuracy problems. I know it may seem to be something that you have to get used to, but it is really no big deal. Every bullet/ load combo has it's own " sweet " spot. Once you find it, game over. Typically is a STW, the magic number seems to be around 3.660-3.665 OAL, using a full bodied bullet. Additionally, and as with most other bullets as well, they shoot there best when loaded to near max. Keep us in the loop with your progress, and all the best of luck to you.

Monzola, Welcome to the insanity, and addiction to 7MM STW. You are in for the ride of your life, and if you aren't careful, you may end up owning MORE THAN ONE. There area few of us here that have that affliction.
The platform that you just bought should serve you well. You have a very good combination going for you. You will find lots of folks here that will be more than willing to help with any snags that you may run into. It is a great round to load, and really isn't too fussy. There are a few favorite go to powders that will get you started if you hand load. ( I am assuming at this point that you do). Again, Welcome aboard, and be careful, you might just learn something, if not, at least you will get a good laugh once in a while. Take care!
