I put a McMillan game warden on my rem. bartlin barrel STW. palm swell is a little to thick for me. I heard that greybo was nice and has a smaller price tag . the 8.5 twist loves the 160 and 175 sierra gk deer no so much....
The nosler partitions wont let you down. They shot a 4" group @ 500 to, so not bad for a flat base.I'm new to this thread but have tried to read though the last 20 pages or so, seems like a great group with lots of experience.
I'm trying to decide on which bullet or bullets to go with for one of my STWs. I now have two nice STWs, the newest addition is a used McWhorter built on a Defiance action with a Brux 8 twist #5 barrel in a Game Warden stock and and I'm shooting the 195s in it. My original STW is a Collier Rifles Rem 700 with a #3 Bartlein 8.7" twist with a McMillan HTG stock, this rifle is pretty light weight and is more of my every day, go-to deer rifle. I am shooting and having good results with the 180 VLDs and retumbo in this gun, but now that I have the other gun shooting 195s, I figured I might go for some lighter, faster bullets in this one.
I'm thinking about trying the 168 VLDs, but also considering stuff in the 150 range and looking for any good opinions and experience. I'm mostly shooting deer and hogs in Georgia up to 500 yards, if I'm lucky. I tried some 140 Accubonds last year, they shot great but the gun was 0/3 on does and 3/3 on hogs with them. The shots on the does might not have been perfect but I still expected to find them. I also have some neighbors shooting 140 Accubonds in their STWs and I've heard bad reports on blood trails and recoveries. I think they are just zipping through the deer and not causing enough damage. I know any of the bullets will kill quickly with a well placed shot, but I'm looking for one that is more forgiving for a marginal shot. Maybe the VLD, ABLR, TTSX, LRX, Sierra Gamechanger, Partition, etc.
Thanks
Sam
What's your experience with seating depth for the 150 sciroccos? I shot them some through my old barrel and they didn't group well so I didn't spend much time with themPractice, etc. with other 150s. Then game hunt with the 150 Swift Scirccos. You wont be sorry!
If your gun doesn't group well with sciroccos it will like the noslers flat base. Thats been my experience.Well I just found that Nosler has a good sale on the Nosler Custom 7 STW ammo with 150 partitions. Only $40 a box of 20, which is cheaper than the brass when it's on sale. I ordered some of that, maybe it will shoot well, if not I can just pull the bullets and try a different recipe
