What a deal! What brand of brass were they?

FE,
I have been using Nosler BT & Ballistic Silvertips for years, I agree sometimes they do not shoot thur & thur,,,BUT here is how I look at it,,,the animal absorbs the entire energy that the bullet produces! When a bullet passes thur there is LOST energy still in the bullet!! If it does not pass thur the animal took it ALL!!

I have two STW's that love THOSE bullets. One likes the 140's, and one likes the 150's. With those bullets, most of the time, the bullet ends up in the off side, and sometimes goes through. They give the most dramatic kills I have ever seen. I have seen the deer actually " bulk" at the shot from sudden shock, and usually DRT. Whether or not the bullet went through, or balled up in the off side, one common denominatior is the dropped dead right there, or in a FEW feet. And the ones that did move were dead on there feet and did not know it.that bullet in particular is like " deer lightening". If your gun, or any gun will shoot them you can ask for no more.

They were new Remington, what luck.

Good brass, and a great deal!!! Can't go wrong with that. Up until recently, I have been shooting Winchester brass that I purchased years ago. Well, I SADLY had to discard 60 pieces just a few days ago. Believe me when I tell you it made me sick to throw it away, but it had all been shot plenty. So, I broke out a box of once fired Remington brass, that was originally A- Square factory ammo. (some of there ammo used rem. Brass). I processed all the brass, and loaded it with my " standard" load, and to the range I went. It shot excellent. I liked the neck tension on the first loading, but will see how the next loading goes as for the same.
I still have plenty of win. Brass, and a few boxes of Federal as well. I have had good luck with remington brass for the most part. Welcome to the " Brotherhood".

Alright,

I'm almost out of the first load That I loaded to get my rifle on paper. It was a generic load that consisted of a 160g Sierra Gameking HPBT and 76g IMR7828. Loaded to fit into the magazine.

It shot just under an inch at 100yds. I have no plans on using Sierras any more, nor do I want to buy any more IMR7828 if I don't have to.....

Anyway, I'm now looking to try build another working load aside from the 180g Bergers that I'm working with. I have quite a few 162g Hornady A-max bullets. I also have H1000, Retumbo, US-869, & RL-22. If you have other powder choices, please indicate I'll listen to any ideas....

Thanks,

Dan

If you can get your hands on some 177 grain Cauterrucios, (I think that's about the spelling) Len on here used to shoot them out of his 7 Dakota at either 3050 or 3150 area and the 7Dakota is fairly close to the stw in case capacity. The gunsmith that built my stw loaded some and broke my gun in, he got 1 group with them of 1 1/4 I think at a little over 400 yards.

I'm going to buy some when I see them.

I have 168 bergers and 180 bergers and they shoot good too.

It seems like H-1000 is a mainstay for the stw from what I read.

I'm new to this forum so please dont crucify me if I do something wrong. I'm in the early stages of doing a 7STW build. My doner gun is a Sendero chambered in 300RUM. I am planning on staying with the sendero barrel contour and using a 28 inch Hart barrel with a 1 in 9 twist. I plan on shooting the 180 Berger VLD's. My gunsmith who admittedly doesnt do much work on customs asked me how I wanted it chambered. I didn't know what to tell him. That is what my question is to any experts that are "in the know" about this cartridge. Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated...

Dennis

Before I dropped money on a build I would find a smith with a great reputation and experience with building rifles.

Thats good advise and I would agree, however part of the reason I'm doing this is to help him gain some experience. I believe he has all the capability in the world and appreciate his honesty. So do you have any info on how to chamber it?

Thx, Dennis

Sawyer,I agree with sleepy on the smith,But if yor commited to him IMO less is more I prefer a tight chamber with a minimal head space but thats just me......I assume your reloading so you know about shoulder bump.....Im sure 7STW and Fred Ea will have some good avice Im sure they will post something directly,Hope this helps,Once again like Sleepy said if your smith is asking you, I would do something else

Once again I think it's good advise to hire a pro. I've had this guy do several things for me and all have turned out really nice. I like to shoot guns a lot. However I have little to no knowledge of gunsmithing. I did however work for many years as a millwright and was around machinists quite a bit. I would think if he was given the proper specs he would be able to do the job. Am I missing something here??? For instance I am assuming the limited headspace you are suggesting is due to the belted case right? Any other suggestions?
