Ummm, just a thought, IMHO, the 4831 is too fast, and the Retumbo has not worked well in any of mine either. You are on the right track with the RL 25 and the heavy weights, but with the 168 VLD's, try H1000. I have gotten to be very fond of that powder. It works well, and ES, and SD are low. Don't give up on it, it will come around. I had a " fit" with my Sako, when I was trying to get it to shoot. When I got it, it was unfired, and about eight years old. So I was dealing with break in, as well as load tuning. At first, it would not shoot 140's at all, however, I did not try the 140 TSX at that time. Then, I got it to shoot 162 a maxes VERY well. Then I bought some 140 TSX's for my 700 LSS, and tried a few in the STW, over 80.3 grains of RL 22 @ 3.702 OAL. Ave velocity was 3411. I backed it down to 79.5 for safety reasons. This thing is now a laser. The first load was safe, but I just wanted a little buffer. With the VLD's you have to find the " sweet" spot with them. It may not be max length that it shoots best. If you so decide to try 140's, there simply is no better powder that RL 22. This stuff makes them scream, and hit like a train. My best primer has been the 215. Don't be afraid to try different primers. Sometimes that is all it takes. Keep the faith Brother!

Well, I suppose we could let one more poor old STW fan in . WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD!!!! We all have became sort of a clan, and PM each other once in a while, and you need to feel like you can do the same. I have been a stout fan of this marvel since it became a legit caliber back in 1997. I presently own three, and am building one as we speak. ( you can not have TOOOO many, my wife disagrees). Where were you able to find your rifle at, and how many rounds through it? Just curious. There is a wealth of info on this site, and if you look back through this thread, you will pick up a lot of info. This is a exciting round to play with, and will amaze you when you get yours tuned . They shoot like lasers, and take out deer like lightening . I own a 300 RUM, and the STW takes them out with more Pizazzzzz. Welcome aboard!

Gunbroker.com if you can believe it! The listing wasn't done very well, I think that's why I was able to get it--$850 and I was the only bidder! Don't know how many rounds down the pipe, it was like pulling teeth to get any info from the guy. The title of the auction was 7mm STW. the description was two lines long--basically just said Remington SF, trigger tuned to 2.5lbs, stock modified and painted. I have two buddies with Sendero STW's, and they have killed many cow elk with them, so I'm glad to get one! I was ready to buy a used 700 SPS SS in 7mag, and have it rechambered to STW. Still want that SPS SS--it was like brand new, and only $450. Hmmmm, wonder if the wife would find out.......

Well, you certainly got it for a good price. I never find those deals. Well, sometimes I do. ! The thing that I have noticed about the used STW's on the market is they were not sold because they were shot out, but mostly because they were closet queens. That being due to lack of factory ammo,and that some folks do not reload. If there ever was a genuine hand loaders cartridge, this is it. Factory ammo, even in premium form is plain Vanilla. But when you hand load them, they smoke!!!!I would get that SPS, and do what you mentioned. A friend of mine rechambered a shot out 7 mag Browning A Bolt with 26 inch barrel. That thing is a absolute lazier, and shoots nearly as good as a heavy barrel. The deer on his farm hate that gun, because he says if he can see um' he can kill um'. These guns are typically a one bullet weight gun. There are exceptions, but usually the above is true. Some like 140's, some like150's, and some won't shoot anything but 160 class bullets. Wow, I thought I got my Sendero 7mm STW for a deal. You basically stole yours for $850. I love my two Sendero 7mm STW and I'm sure you are going to love yours too.
What kind of optics are you going to put on your 7mm STW?
On mine for the base and rings I put a 20 MOA EGW Remington 700 Picatinny Rail Tactical Scope Base and Burris Xtreme Tactical Picatinny Style Rail 30mm Rings.
For the scope I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 MOA Reticle.
I think it is an awesome set-up!

It's going to wear a Leupold MK4 6.5-20 with a TMR reticle. Couldn't tell from the pic what kind of bases it had on it, or even if the bases come with the gun, but either way I am gonna go with Burris Signature rings.
I'm just getting started on my factory Rem stw. First loads were 168 VLD's and retumbo. Seems like touching the lands and more powder the better. Groups are 1 1/4 at 100 with 78.5 grains.
I tried 140 Ballistic tips with rl25 yesterday. I loaded some on the lands and .025 off, both with 80 grains. 3" difference in group height but both groups were under 1". I've pretty much decided to hunt with accubonds so I will stick with the ballistic tips for development and will probably try some rl22 also. I should be able to get a good setup with one of those powders.
On another point, when you measure COAL, are you using a gage ? if I measure to the actual tip of the cartridge there is a .020 difference. So, if I see a COAL 3.706 mentioned, is that with a gage?

Typically when someone mentions OAL, it usually means from the tip to the base. For the most part, all of mine are loaded to box length minus .050 for clearance purposes. On my Remingtons, that usually ends up being 3.669.(OAL) on my Sako, that one has a very generous mag box. I load them to 3.702, and they still got in the box and function. But again, to answer your question, COAL is from tip to base. P/ S, you will find that RL22 works wonderful with 140 class bullets. Velocity will be smokin', and accuracy usually awesome. Federal 215'susually work best, but have had win. WLRM primers to be effective as well. You might want to try some 7828 as well. Take care, have fun!!!!
