7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Thanks for the info. Not currently reloading but highly intrested! Any preferance on a press? Single stage or progressive? Looking to shoot white tail 400+, not incredibly long but trying to get my foot in door.

Ben, what stock, and optics are you going with? Russo? McMillan? HS? Man, I went on Russo's website the other day, and boy, he has some BEAUTIFUL stuff. Exotics, laminates, you name it.
On your Kreiger barrel is a 5 land, or six. It seems as though the the 5 r is quite the rage recently. Did you go with a heavy contour? I'm sure it will be shooter, you have all the goodies to do it right! keep us posted! Sounds good so far!

I'm thinking of going with Manners on this one. I just became a dealer for them so I may as well try it right? I'm still debating on the T2, T3 or MCS-EH3. I'm all over the place and can't make up my mind. I own a few HS's and love them and I have a McMillian and like it too, just going to something else to spread the assortment out. I might end up with 2-3 different stocks for this rifle.
I got the 5r rifling, not because I wanted it or didn't want it but I was able to get my hands on a Krieger and not wait until next year to get it. Just worked out that way. It's a #15 Standard Palama contour, double straight taper

Just got my frist stw, 700 ation,1-9 hart barrel, bell and carlson m40 stock. Have shot double tap 140's with decent results. What my opions for this caliber?
140's are light for this caliber. With the 9 twist you can shoot even the heaviest bullets.

Double Tap has some 160 Accubonds that should shoot well for you if you wish to keep shooting factory ammo. HSM also loads the 7mm STW with a 168 Berger VLD. I haven't shot the latter but generally HSM is decent factory ammo.

If you'll stick with the 150 or higher weight bullets it should perform better and better for you. If you are going to start reloading I'd say look at the Hornady Interbonds, Interlocks (elk) Swift Sirocco and Nosler Accubonds and just find a bullet that shoots well then tweak your load until you find the sweet spot.

There are lots of good single stage presses out there made by Lee, Hornady, RCBS, Redding and others. I've used hornady and Lee as well as RCBS forever for different applications and they all work fine.

Hornday and Redding are probably the best when it comes to dies, with RCBS being close behind.

I use all three as well. The redding is by far the top of the line, but it's also the most expensive. I like the hornady dies, but not the dementions that hornady runs on their sizing dies for the most part. they're all on the extreme edge of the minimums. The seating die on hornady is great for an inexpensive die too. For a novice reloader I would not reccomend a progressive press, nor for someone wanting to do multiple calibers and not tons of volume (less than a few hundred here and there)

For anyone wanting precision from their rifle I just don't think there's a progressive press on the market that can be trusted.

You can set up 2-3 three single stage presses and weigh each load (powder charge) on an automatic powder scale and still crank out a lot of ammo in a short period of time.

I never do a complete full length resizing even with FRS dies so the tolerance on the Hornady dies has never been an issue for me.

I load separately for each rifle and will set my dies accordingly for each of them. I just size to the base of the neck and then back off about 1/8-1/4 of a turn. I'm almost bumping the shoulder but not quite.

Ben, a #15? What does it weigh? It must look like its suppressed!

I don't mind a heavy gun, I think if your gun is too heavy you should probably golf. I'm just curious on this rig. You are from Southern California, would you take this up Whitewater Canyon?

I'd search for getting started reloading and similar as I've been part of a few really good threads on the subject.

BFakes, I'd recommend stay with single stage. There is just too much that can and will go wrong with a progressive press. I do think that they are much better suited for handgun, and shotgun, then large centerfire rifle. The biggest reason is consistency. That is what you always strive for, and me personally, I don't think you can get that from a progressive. You can't FEEL the bullet seat, and you can't FEEL the primer seat, and you can only HOPE it drops the right amount of powder. No thanks, I'll pass!
The RCBS rock chuck press is a good start. Redding makes the " crem de LE crem" of presses, but for a premium.
Reloading is in itself a addiction, as is the STW. Once you get the right components, and you learn how to make them work for you, you are all set. If you have questions or problems, right here is where you probably can find the answer.

so i have a abolt laying around in my cabinet. 7mm mag i purchased it to make a long range rig but after reading about barrel changes being a pain i racked it. recently i seen interest in modifying abolts. my question is what to do to it....after purchasing my 7mm stw no 1 i love the stw more than my mags. should i rebarrel it to stw and replace trigger and stock. true action. or find diff donor. if i rebarrel i would get a new barrel with a heavier contour. and i know it would cost more than finding one already done but half the fun and esteem is being a part of ur build. any gunsmith recomendations welcome. i live in pa

Kakorb, I just remembered that about 17 years ago, Rick Jamison, Shooting Times reloading editor wrote a article called" Pressurizing the 7 mm Mag". The gun he used was a rechambered Browning Stainless stalker. If I recall, he claims amazing accuracy, and velocity also. That was right about the time that the STW was really catching on. I still have that magazine somewhere in my " keepers box".
The point being, it can be done, and they shoot **** well to boot!
OR, you can send it to Nescopek, and have Hart screw a barrel into it.

i havent found a load that im sold on for accuracy out of the abolt so probably will send it away for a barrel. would you recommend sending it to hart and let them install the barrel.

When it comes to the Palma contours, #15 isn't a huge truck axle like it normally would be. Weight is around 5.5lbs (barrel) at a 30" finish length. Overall gun weight I want around 11-12lbs. My M110 weighs 16lbs 4 oz unloaded. I carried it no problems for 15 days in the Black Hills, South Dakota this past deer season. Granted I have a great sling system rigged the way I want it. Makes it feel like a 6 lb gun. Flush Cups are a wonderful thing on bolt gun stocks to run "tactical" slings to spread the heavy load out more.

Link to Krieger on the barrel size and weight.

If you read no the Wyatt's site they have their own followers for their magazine boxes.

Magazine Boxes, WYATT'S OUTDOOR, INC.

Talked to the guys at Wyatts yesterday. They only make followers for center loading conversions for Rem 700. For the winchesters, using the factory follower and spring is the way to go according to them. I'm about to find out so I'll post it up whenever I get time to work on my own stuff in the shop.
