7mm Remington Mag Shooters

Berger 180's in a 28" 9 twist at 3050 over a stout charge of US869.
Berger 168's in a 24" 10 twist @ 3150 over an off-book charge of US869.
Hornady 154's in a 24" 10 twist over near max charge of IMR 4831 or IMR 4350 @ 3000.

Very few things are as realiable a killer of large ruminating herbivores as the old 7RM. Needs stout bullets and wise shot placement if you're going to be encountering game very close up.

An 8 twist is only necessary if you're going to use the 195's from berger. No other bullet will need that in the remington magnum version.

According to twist calculators I need a 8 twist to fully stabilize the 180 eld and 183 smk. I'm at 1000ft

I'm near the coast, probably hunt at 200' ASL, and a 9 twist loaded moderately to 2850 put three 180 ELDs in the same hole at 100 yards. I enjoy my 7mm Rem Mag tremendously and would not hesitate to hunt anything in the lower 48 with it.

I prefer a 9 twist, but I don't have any interest in the 195's.
retumbo, 175 eldx @ 3086, 27" brux. This is by no means a starting load, it's close to max in this rifle. This is one of the few consistent sub 1/2 moa rifles I've had and shoots great to 1500.

I bet the 175's will work just fine, you might give up a little on the bc end of things, but probably not enough to notice inside 1000 anyway.
If they don't work, shoot the 162's or 168's, you'll stabilize them just fine for sure.
I dropped a cow in her tracks at 890 with my 280ai and a 162 eldx @ 2920. It was impressive how much damage it did.

I'm just started looking for a 7mm barrel with a 1:8 twist. I want to shoot 180 eldm on the far side on 1k so I figure max stability will be best.
If proof makes a 1:8 twist 7mm barrel that's what I'm going to order, just waiting to hear back from the guy I'm going order through.

Yes, Proof makes a 1:8 twist 7mm barrel.

On sale for $729.99 at Stocky's right now... And they have both 26" & 28" 1:8 twist Sendero blanks in stock right now. https://www.stockysstocks.com/proof-research-carbon-fiber-barrels.html

FWIW ,I forgot to include in my first reply . I've also killed 2 caribou with hornady 154 interbonds . one just under 400 yards . my rifle's a 9.5 twist 24"bbl . the 7 rem mag is my go to rifle when I go away on a trip .

I shoot the 162 eld-m at 3112. It really tears up white tail and it has impressive ballistics out to 1000. At my elevation I'm holding 1200ftlbs and 1800fps at 1k

View attachment 90698 My group at 200 yds with my all time favorite load!! This is from a basic Savage 7mm LRH. Have yet to find a rifle this load didn't shoot great with!

Wait for it ....

Base to ogive 3.745 (.015 0ff the lands)
168gr berger vld
Winchester brass
Winchester magnum primer
Retumbo-69.3gr
Fps 3037 (24"barrel) 9FPS extreme spread

Not hot what so ever (in my rifle anyways)

Enjoy!!

Your welcome

Savage rocks!

WOW, 3.745" CBTO is serious stuff, even for COAL. Is it a typo?

I shot my 7mm for years and never had an issue. I could not get a smoking round I had to shoot slow. 62 grains of h1000 behind a 175 eld-x but it was the most accurate. If I remember right I was around 2700 to 2750 at the muzzle. That being said I would have shot an animal to 800 yards and not thought twice. Whatever it touched it dropped. According to applied ballistics, I could have gone to 1100. I personally would not. I don't think the rifle was capable of consistent accuracy past 800 anyway. I had it reworked to a 28 nos and have never thought about the slow 7mm since.
