7 MM REM MAG probably has taken more game than all those others combined, and ammo is available just about everywhere.
With stout H1000 loads and 168 or greater staying with a 1- 8 barrel no sweat out to 1000 and it kills them every time just cheaper.
I have a 7mm Rem Mag on a Winchester M70 CRF I dubbed the 7mm HAMR (Hunting And Match Rifle) Literally nothing about it is special except my smith did a match chamber job.
First barrel I did 23" if I remember right, and the 2nd barrel has a 25" if I remember right. (or vice versa...I'd honestly have to check)
What I can tell you from pure memory is that each barrel is comfortably able to send HBN coated 180 Berger Hybrids beyond 3100 FPS with RL33
One of them did 3105 and the other was like 3140 with the same ammo. Same charge, same CBTO, same primers etc.
I think it's the perfect combination of bullet weight and velocity for running down steel at about 2000-2400 yds under the right conditions. Once you get there, even a 180 starts to leave really small dust signatures when you miss. Even with ideal dirt backers or hill sides.
Ive gone up to 195 EOLs at around 3000, and 190 Atips at around 3050, but I think in the powder column of the 7mmRem Mag...the 180-185 gr bullet is about ideal.
I do love the idea of the 7-300 PRC, but IMO...the case length lends itself better to a 7-300 Norma (bolt face being the factor) if you want to really run 190-195gr bullets, but I'm sure both will get the job done. I've said it before, for me personally, I don't think the 7PRC is the right tool for 190-195s. Should work great for 168-185 though
