7 STW fun

I have a 7 STW and don't get to shoot it much these days. But, it's a solid deer whacker. I once used the 140s, but a deer ran about 100 yds and pilled up. Went to the 150 Swift Scirocco's and all deer were DRT no matter how far they were.

I had a Remington 700 re-barreled by K&P in South Dakota to 7 mm STW about 30 years ago. My buddy showed me the article in Shooting Times Westerner by Layne Simpson and we both decided to build rifles using this round.

I had to use 7mm Mag dies to re-size the case since it was still a wildcat at that time. I used to neck down and fire-form 8mm Mag cases and then just resize the neck with the dies during re-loading.

Best varmint load for accuracy while maintaining good velocity was:

8mm Mag brass necked down to 7mm and fire formed
79 or 81 gr H4831
120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
Federal Magnum Primer
3.750 COL
.015 out of lands
3620 fps
3/8" groups

I worked up a hunting round also that shot very well.

Best shooting rifle that I ever had re-barreled as far as consistency goes...I will never get rid of this rifle.

Hey guys, I have a funny 7 STW story to tell... A few years ago, I was working loads up for an Elk hunt. I loaded Barnes TSX 160's, and Accubond 140's ( for the first time ever ). Before then, I had only shot 160's. After awhile, my friend says, your "small" bullets group better than your "big" ones. He called them small ones because the holes on paper were noticeably smaller with the 140's. It hit me like a ton of bricks... the diameter should have been identical!!! For YEARS, I had been shooting a 160gr TSX bullet that wasn't fully stabilizing! This story took place at 100 yds. My rifle is a Weatherby Accumark with 1: 10 twist, if I remember correctly. During that same period, I had tried 168 Barnes LRX's and they keyholed 90 degrees at 100 yards. So... for some reason, my rifle doesn't quite stabilize a 160 gr Barnes TSX.

I have 2 STW's. Rem 700 SS rechambered from 7 RM by Robby Hart and another Rem 700 Sendero SF. Both have new triggers. Haven't hunted with the Hart rig but the Sendero has taken a moose at 385 yds. and a big Nebraska WT at 250 yds. both DRT. Both shoot the same load well. 160 NAB 74gr IMR 7828 CCI 250 OAL 3.065. Both sub-MOA at 500 aand 600 yds.

Crazy creedmoomoo guy tried to tell me 6.5 was better, I said at what distance because unless it has after burners the creedmoomoo will never catch up. Whats wrong with these people.?

Energy is not even close. Damage/wound channel is very impressive at 3200+ fps. Love my STW and 28 nosler!

OAL should be 3.565
