I'm wanting to maximize the 7 SAUM case shooting out of a long action and was curious to hear some more experienced opinions other than my own. I tend to shoot the 180 VLD target bullets

It seems a saami freebore is .090". With this reamer it shows .290". Is this too much freebore? I noticed many folks, when referencing the same cartridge/bullet cartridge refer to .200" of freebore as ideal. Is that because .090" is considered saami and then add an additional .200"?

I remember the advice given to you by another LRH member from .200" (175) to .230" (for the 195), and I said to go with the .215" to average the two on your other thread. My latest build a .338 Thor (NMI), Manson built it with a .220" freebore. My advice is whatever freebore you decide on your chamber reamer is also to ask Manson to make you a corresponding sizer reamer so your GS can build your custom dies using blank dies.

Great advice was given, I'm just trying to learn/understand why it was good advice. Haha

.090" is short.
.290" is long.
.200" is even pretty long.
For a 7SAUM, I wouldn't personally shoot any heavier than a 184 Hyb. So that leaves the 195 and 197s out. So that .200" sounds perfect.
Since 7saum is the largest case i have in 28cal (7-08rem is the only other 28cal i have) i plan on shooting 185's and 195's being out of a 28" tube. I can't decide on which long action cartridge to add in 28cal? None meet what I want to do and therefore moved up to 30cal long actions. Now if I do a 28-338nm, that'll be the ticket!

You say no 7mm cartridges meet what you want to do, so what are you looking to accomplish with a 7mm cartridge?

7-300PRC
28 Nosler
7-300NMI
7-338LMI
Not to derail the thread and go sideways but I have experience with the list above with 3 of the 4 listed as well as the 7 Saum which is one of my favorites.
28 Nosler with 195's @ 3060 fps
7/338 NMI with 195's @ 3250 FPS
7/338 LMI with 195's @ 3310 fps
No experience with the 7/300 prc
7 saum with 175 EH's @ 3051 fps in a remy short action and a 26" tube
The 2 7/338 improved cases take a .585 bolt face
The 28 takes a .540 bolt face
some info to chew on
The debate on the 7saum in a long action can be found in the internals of this forum as well as across the inter web
