Does anyone have load data and/or anecdotal evidence concerning using the 7 SAUM/168 VLD combination for deer hunting? The more detail, the better.

Thanks

Dan

A buddy of mine has a 7saum with a 26" barrel. He shoots the 180grain Berger Hybrids with 62grains of H4831sc. It send them at 2800+. The BC of the 180 crushes the 168. So it's a long way to say, my recommendation would be to consider the 180 rather than the 168.

I have been shooting the 180 VLD and Hybrid. Out of my barrel, it is running in the mid 2900s depending on the load. I have some 168s and was looking at the ballistics compared to the 180s. It looks like they are pretty even in the wind at least out to 800 if you can get the 168 to 3050 - 3100. I don't know if those speeds are posssible with that bullet in a 26" barrel.

It is hot and miserable down here so I spend too much time thinking about these things.

Agree. If you can send the 168s fast enough, they will actually outperform the 180s out to a certain point. Then the higher BC of the 180 will take over.

For instance, i shoot the 208amax in my 300rum. Many people ask why I don't shoot the 230otm. It's because I can launch the 208 fast enough that the 230 does not have an advantage until 1200 yards. Right now, 1200 is beyond my ability. As a result, I shoot the 208 really fast.

I shoot the 168vld out of my 7saum. 65.5g Retumbo 3150fps out performs my 7swm with the 180vld going 2950fps.

Do yo have a standard SAUM? What is your OAL? Jump or in lands? Brass and primer? What length barrel are you using?

65.5 gr Retumbo? Interesting. I have been shooting 65.7 gr under both the 180 Hybrid and the 180 VLD. It is pretty hot, but safe in my gun. Velocity is 2940 with the 210M and 2975 with the WLR. Both in Nosler brass.

How much Retumbo have you shot under the 180 VLD?

I think trying the 168 will be worth doing.

Sorry for all of the questions,

Dan

In my 7 saum, 26 inch barrel I like the accuracy of 168 vld with 64 and 64.2 Magpro 2.932 COL, .030 jump in a standard chamber. 2953 FPS. No pressure signs, long brass life, and usually under 0.75 moa when I do my part. ( 64 is my summer load for 95* Colo summer days).
