7 rem mag or 280 ack?

Old question but I have set parameters that I'm working in.
Gun is to be built. Will be saami spec 280 or 7 rem with 1/8 ish barrel.
I have:
7 rem mag dies and brass.
Hundreds of 180 gr bullets.
8 lbs H1000
Fed match primers 210 and 215
Currently have a ackley chamber 280 rifle and dies.
So I will need 280 ack saami dies and brass.
Tired of fire forming.
Rifle will have a 26 inch barrel and a brake.
Must hit 2950+ with 180 class bullets.
Will be used for 1k shooting and hunting.
RBros just posted a 280 ack for sale 24 inch running 2950 with 180's.
Thoughts?
Once again, it depends on your use. I prefer the 280AI due to the lighter rifle and less muzzle blast. I believe the 280AI will also serve you longer.

That being said, the 7mmRM is an outstanding cartridge. It can be pushed slightly harder.

I have both. Personally, I think many people get a 280 AI and go to extreme lengths to try to get magnum performance out of that cartridge. The 280 AI is a great cartridge, but it won't quite achieve magnum level performance, if that is what you're looking for.

I think you would be pushing a 280 AI VERY hard to achieve what you're looking for.

7 PRC........ only because someone else is going to say that. Even though the OP didn't mention it. The 280 AI is just a performer and will meet your parameters. No need to look further. Still I'd go with 7PRC!😊
My 26" rem. 7mag + brake will out shoot 3 different 7PRC rifles. 8 in. Twist 1/2 " @ 200 yds that's velocity and accuracy and vel. My 280 ack with same bullet is alittie slower @ 2990 fps.

With lighter bullets, the 280AI can get there. But with 175gr & up, the 7mm RM is not reachable.

24 inch Ackley won't get you 2950 unless it's a fast barrel. I shoot 175 Berger Elites out of my AI. 2960 fps. I wouldn't chase a number like that with the 180s. You'll end up disappointed. Accuracy, pleasant shooting and efficiency I'd go 280 AI. Oh wait, I did! I gave my 7 mag to my son and sold the 7 PRC.

I do not like this cartridge or that cartridge discussions. I have 5 different 7mm rifles - but no AI. So not needed but not having one would drive my decision to keep filling out the family horizontally I do not typically buy different rifles in same caliber - what I call vertical purchasing. Not true for 270's though. So AI based on not having one. Sure kind of a dumb reason given your parameters that others smarter than me have given reasons for. But I do love learning from all of you. Awesome stuff.

Years ago, I built a truck load of 7 mags and a wheel barrel load of 280 Ak Imp, if you're into hot roding at all, go with the Mag. I had a few of the guys bring their 280 back to punch it out to 7 mag, kind of a pain as you now need to open the bolt face and tinker with feed rails. With all the new powders and high BC bullets available today it helps to have room for powder. You don't really need the speed with the range finders available, but after years of varmint shooting you can easily see the advantage of high speed in the wind, if the bullet gets there quicker the wind has less time to push your slugs around. Sure, your barrel won't last long, but life's too short to hunt with a boring rifle.😉

Ill kiss anyone's *** on here if you can find me an animal that can tell the difference between a 7mag or 280ai. That is, if its still alive to say.
I shoot 280ai 180 pills at 2756 over 4831sc, bug holes all day. Not one critter has ever been able to complain. Thats a true dope too, not chronograph numbers. You can get another 100-150fps or better with R23, good luck finding any, so why waste powder on a 7mag? Unless every hunting or shooting situation you experience is hella windy, those extra fps wont amount to much.
If you hunt Idaho, dont worry about longrange hunting, the IDFG is in the process of shutting it down anyway! Bitterness intended!
Not the real question, but what is IDFG doing?
