6.5mm 140 Berger VLD for LARGE mulie bucks?

Three mule deer have fallen to a little 115 gr Berger VLD from my .25-06 now - one doe at 400, a young buck at 175 yards, and a big buck at 230 yards. The little bullets dropped them all right away.

I think your bigger 6.5mm 140's will do even better.

what brass, primer, powder and charge?

Lapua Brass, CCI 200, 56g H1000 *** (this is over max suggested in loading manual but has shown no pressure signs in my gun)

Sorry it took me so long to get back. (Realize that the charge listed may not be safe in your gun and proceed at your own risk.)

Michael, I doubt this will help, but I was afforded the opportunity to test the 140 gr 7mm VLD a few years ago. As usual it was wonderfully accurate. I only had the opportunity to test it on game once. I shot a nice mulie at a touch over 300 yds with a high shoulder shot. The impact actually knocked him uphill and he was DRT. It took out the on shoulder and spine. Lots of internal damage, no exit. Hope that helps.

Jim

I think you will find your 140 will do wonders on large mulies.
I took the largest body mule deer I've ever shot this year with berger 130vld
Out of a savage 6.5 creedmoor. 385 yds with a 25mph crosswind and it was like I hit him with the .300 weatherby. One step and done. The lungs were completely
Vaporized and the back shoulder was shattered into a million pieces. Completely dressed (without head or hide) the buck weighed 185 lbs. I think he would have been well over 250 before dressing. He also went 187" before deductions and drying period.
Load: hornady brass, 43.7g of h4350, fed 210, coal- 2.831

I use these! Then I CAN EAT right up to the hole!!:):D

This is a pretty cool picture.

What are the white paper/coatings on there?

I've never seen that before? They look bigger than 6.5 too.

Thanks,
Ed

I was having some problems asking the question and finally got to a page and saw the discription. Very cool.

Larger-gigundie.

Thanks

Here is a video clip of an Elk kill at 925 yards using the 140 Berger VLD from a 6.5x284

Mature Alberta mulies run as big as they get. No problem on the big guys with a well placed shot with a 140 Hunting VLD out to 1000 yards. My 6.5x284 load at 2970MV produces the same velocity/ energy at 1000 yards as my 270WSM using 140 Accubonds at 3150MV at 700 yards. That 6.5 Berger is a great high BC bullet that performs excellently from 200 yards out tp 1000 yards. I've taken 11 deer of all sizes between 200 and 1000 yards. All dead with one shot. In my experience the difference between a really big deer and an average size might be 100 pounds. It doesn't influence my choice of caliber.
