6.5cm brass (Small rifle Vs. Large)

I went to go buy some lapua brass and mostly what I'm finding for 6.5cm is brass with small rifle primer. I am not sure what the benefits of one versus the other would be. Can you help?

From what I read, SR primers "may" provide lower SD and ES and better brass life but could potentially be bad in cold weather hunting? If this is true, what type brass would you recommend for large rifle primers? I do not do a lot of shooting, so brass life means little to me. Thanks!

The small primers will hold pressure better. They could cause ignition issues when cold but I doubt they will due to case capacity of the CM.

Do the larger primer pockets only show pressure signs when you push the max charges beyond recommended? I bought Hornady ELD ammo and it has the larger primer if Im not mistaken.

Do you use the Hornady brass for reloading? That was my plan before reading this. Lapua brass is softer, isnt it?

I used Hornady brass in my CM. It is junk but I got great accuracy with low ES so I did not worry about it. Lapua is much harder and more consistent.

is your accuracy better with the Lapua? Does it last longer?

I couldn't tell the difference in accuracy but I would say on average Lapua would be better. The Lapua absolutely lasts longer.

By junk do you mean how long it lasted? I only need brass to get 3 or 4 firings.

I would say it lasts about the same as other large primer options, despite what others may say. I tested against peterson and adg and they all lasted the same. The Hornady was very very inconsistent. Again this did not seem to have a noticeable effect on accuracy even at long range.

inconsistent meaning things like neck tension, over all weight, h20 capacity? Can you recommend other brass which has large primers but is more consistent for 6.5cm?

In my testing Peterson Large rifle primer brass was the most consistent in the CM. Not by much but it had the smallest es and sd on weight. Contrary to what a few manufactures say the es and sd were almost exactly the same between weights and measured volume.

Please clarify this. Are you saying that Peterson Brass was consistent in weight and volume? Or something else?

What I'm saying is a few manufactures say that you cannot determine the consistency of volume by measuring the weight of the brass. I have done repeated test where it proves that that statement is incorrect. What I have found is if it has a small extreme spread and standard of deviation on the weight then it will have a small extreme spread and standard of deviation in the volume.


So, yes. Peterson brass was the most consistent in both measurements.
