6.5 ss final design

What's the status of factory headstamped brass for the 6.5 SS? Will it ever be available?

That is something I've thought about quite bit, but it would take one heck of a capital investment to get started. I have thought about running a poll to see how many people would be interested. My understanding from talking to the manufacturer is I would probably have to charge $2 apiece for them.......Rich

I would be interested. I considered the 6.5 SS for when i replace the barrel on my 6.5x284 win, but i dont want to neck turn brass, which seems necessary for this cartridge. Depending on who makes it i think $2 may be do-able.

There are not a lot of options for the brass unless your uncles name is Lapua:D I talked to Quality when I was checking around. They told me that their brass was better than RP or WW and was on par with Hornady.....Rich

Rich, I just wanted to post up this video I stumbled across online about your 6.5 SS...

I'm not sure if they've posted it up somewhere else or not, but I figured this would be the most appropriate place. It's very insightful to the whole brass forming process for those who might be interested, but feel like making the brass could be difficult. He really breaks it down nice and easy.

Thanks Mud! I actually did post this on another thread but maybe a few people missed it. James did a pretty good job of putting it together and the rifle didn't shoot too badly either............Rich

There's a local guy who has a few 700's he's wanting to trade me for a truck winch, and one of them is an old 700 BDL in .350 RemMag. I have no desire to own a .350 RemMag, because they are ballistic nightmares and finding anything (including brass) is nearly impossible, but I was thinking that it might be the perfect donor platform for building a 6.5 SS... What do you think?

Did you ever talk to anyone about making a run of brass for the 6.5 SS? I bet Quality Cartridge would. They'd even make them to correct headstamp.

That would probably make the cartridge even more popular. I don't own a neck-turning setup, or know how to use one, although I'm sure it's not hard to learn.

They will make whatever you want if you are willing to write the check. They quoted me $5750 for 1000 Ultra Mag cases with a custom head stamp. That was leaving them as a cylinder. I would still have to form them.

Yes, that would be a good donor, you would just have to open the bolt face a little. I have spoken with Quality Cartridge a year or so ago and it is REALLY spendy to get set up for a run. I think they would end up costing about $2.50/ea. and the minimum is several thousand. As far as neck turning goes, all you need is a $35 Hornady hand turner to do a great job. It is simple to use............Rich

What would you charge me for 100 pcs of pre-formed brass, just to get started? :D

You know, if I do end up with the rifles and get the cash to buy a barrel blank and dies, of course...

I got thinking about my above post and actually, the 350 remmy would not be the best donor. I say this because I am pretty sure it is the same length action as the new Model seven which is shorter than a regular 700 SA. This would limit your coal with the long bullets in the SS. The 700 sa would be a better way to go. The savage action is even longer than the 700, so that works very well with the long bullets......Rich
