6.5 SAUM Range update

I would just ditch the ABLR and load up the Bergers! JK...

In all seriousness, I was never able to get consistent bullets from different lots and loads with the 190 gr ABLR in several 30 cal rifles. Jammed to long jumps and many in between. I really wanted to like them but the rifles just didn't.

That's a bummer on the 190 ABLR. I wanted to try this one on the next elk hunt. Guess I'll just stick with the 200 hr Accubond.

I researched alot of 30 cal bullets when working on loads for my old 300 wm. I never heard hardly anyone that gave the 190ablr good feedback. I have heard some good feedback on the 129& 142 ablr bullets but I haven't personally tried them. Just about all I shoot now are either eld-m or Berger bullets. I Know the new 153.5 & 144 Berger hybrid targets are pointed. I would really like to give them a try but I don't want to chance pencil through on game. I've been there and done that.

FYI - I've found the 156 Berger EOL shoot well for me and aren't very finnicky on seating depth, can be a bit off lands or close, from my experience. This was both with my 6.5 SAUM and 6.5-284. May be your next choice if you can't get the 142's where you want.

What speed are you seeing with the 156s?

Here's a good example of how little increments of powder affect accuracy.6.5 Saum, All these shots are .015 off lands.
I was shooting 61.0 grains of h-1000 at 3055 and gun was shooting ragged hole. Got new lot of h-1000 and had to go down to 58 grains to get accuracy back. This is the reason I try to get 16 lbs at a time same lot#.
Anyway give those Berger's a shot

I've heard many times how different lots of h1000 could be a good bit far apart. I know this is possible when changing lots in any powder but h1000 has developed quite the reputation for this.

Thanks for sharing that piece of information. Insightful! Much apprecaited. And yes, I will be trying those Berger's for sure. Once I confirm I have this LRABs shooting good... or not... I will move to the Berger's.

Any thoughts on the eldx For your saum? I've had good luck in a creed for hunting and it seems like a good one to try. I'm looking forward to trying those 140 Bergers. Best wishes

Good morning. I have thought about it. Right now I'm on the LRABs and next to Berger 140s and then the 150 class. Maybe the ELD X after.
Have a good one!

Great I've been following this thread due to my interest in the saum. After speaking with the gunwerks crew at the Harrisburg outdoor show they solidified my thoughts on the eldx as a hunting projectile even elk and the low cost of the bullet makes it even more attractive. Again best wishes to you and your work!

*** RANGE UPDATE ***
GAP 6.5 SAUM. ADG Brass - Virgin. 61.4gr H1000. 142gr LRAB. CCI 250 Primers.
Labradar used for recording speed.

Hot and humid here today, but I decided to venture out and shoot 2, 5 shot groups. One at .060 off the lands and one at .090 off the lands.

After shooting the group at .060 off the lands, I am confident I can get it to shoot a bit tighter. Shots 3 and 4, I am fairly certain I adjusted my cheek weld and did not have the gun as tight as I did on shots 1,2 and 5.
At .060 off the lands FPS is at follows:
1. 3028 (Cold Bore)
2. 3041
3. 3052
4. 3054
5. 3057

At .090 off the lands, Shots 1-3 felt great. Shot 4 is totally on me, I messed that up and knew it when I pulled the trigger. Shot 5 felt great, but the FPS dropped considerably. No idea what the deal is with the velocity drop in shot 5.
At .090 off the lands FPS is as follows"
1. 3051
2. 3059
3. 3059
4. 3051
5. 3010
