6.5 Rem mag

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm kinda stuck on the 6.5 RM for some reason. I have done a lot of reading on both and just decided thats the one I want.
As for the total package i just wanted to keep the gun around a $1000 and about the same for a scope.
So i talked to a guy which seems very knowledgable and he said i dont need a long action that a savage 110 .243 or .308 will work (just change the bolt head), is this true?
what caliber do you guys suggest
I checked brass and it seems like midway has a good supply of remington.
I'm new to all of this so please be patient with me I'm trying to do all the reading i can but that only goes so far.
Thanks,
Casey
If you seat the bullet deeper you will be essentially lowering your useable case capacity and defeating some of the purpose of the magnum case. This is in fact the very reason that the 6.5 Rem never achieved the popularity it should have. The factory rifles had the same problem. I may be missing something but could you explain why you think the .284 version will have more recoil? Whatever you build, I would suggest you take in all the available info (advice) and then build what YOU want. That's what I do:D...Rich

He could long throat it and use slow powders to fill up the case capacity. That should work well I would think.

I agree but can he do that with a short action and use the magazine? He could load single and do it but I assumed he would want to use the box?

Well there's a dilema. Chuck Hawks seems to think this cartridge could make a come back with the new powders and everything. I know reloaders nest has some decent load info. I just found out after having a new barrel put on with a SAAMI spec chamber on my 300, that my 208's with seat deep, but doesn't inhibit the capacity enough to really make a difference. I can use H4350 with good results this time. When I long throated the chamber I had pressure and seating issues. I accredit some of that with my smith making it a little longer than what I wanted, but hey... the barrel is dead now, so no use crying over spilled milk. I am very pleased with my new chamber in 300WSM. .75" group at 200yrds hain't to bad for a bullet seated deep in the casing.

So would i be better off getting a long action? For now i only plan on shooting some of the lighter gr bullets like the 120-130's. But would i would like the capiblity to shoot the heavier ones say if the gun doesn't like light bullets.

Well its a hit miss kind of ordeal. I know you want a repeater. Using a short action will require you to seat the bullets deep in the case, but from what I am experiencing right now, It really doesn't matter. I am getting plenty of velocity and getting all the powder I need. I am at the top of my pressures and compressed is a hair to much pressure. So I backed down a little and getting what I am looking for. Stuffing the long bullets shouldn't be an issue from what I am experiencing. The only bullets that may pose an issue are the VLD's if they need to be seated in the lands. That may be a little long, but I currently have my 208's which could be considered a VLD .005" off the lands and they fit in my magazine. So you would have to put together a bullet and try one in an action to see how it all works out.

IMO for what you want, you are better off with the long action. It just gives you more options and you WILL get more velocity all else being equal. As I said earlier though, it needs to be what YOU want:D......Rich

"..it needs to be what YOU want."

Thats the key! We do .243s on long and shorts and the long is a good way to go if you are pushing the OAL way out. Shorts require some work to get the fit and feed right.

Of course if you do a long action, you could do a 6.5-06...as if you don't have enough choices already! Have fun with it and if you are set on the 6.5RM go for it.

Another option that u may want to consider is the 6.5 RSAUM on a necked down 7 RSAUM. That gives a slightly shorter case, longer neck, with a bit more capacity--plus u get that wildcat appeal that's kinda' heart-warming. Bet brass is cheaper too. I wish i'd have gone this route before i had my 6.5 WSM built up. Got a buddy that's loving his 6.5 RSAUM build.

Just ordered some of the new 123-gr. A-Max's for mine from Cheaper than Dirt, and can't wait to send that ~.5 BC bullet out there for some LR coyotes.

I've been holding off until now :D but if you REALLY want some performance out of the long action you could use my 6.5 Sherman reamer and get .264 mag performance with 6-7 grs. less powder......Rich

i would use the stevens 200 in long action it just gives room to changes stuff a short action limits the rounds OAL the rifles are the same in price why not. I bought mine for 320 new at my local dealer and yes on savage changing bolt sizes just swap bolt this combined with the barrel nut is why savages are so popular to customize i used shockade stock and love it bought the rest from brownells but havent bought my barrel yet probly gone get it from norhtlander supply off of www.savageshooters.com/forum another good place for savage stuff is Sharp Shooter Supply - The Savage Specialists i used their trigger but bought it from brownells when i got the rings and base and the rest of my goodies their is tons of info on these sites the savage action is great but its different the rem are smoother but i like mine just takes some getting use too if want a 6.5 rem get one if not you will always wonder what if
