6.5 creedmoor, yes a needmoor

I have 143 eldx and I have 140 berger elite hunters, I want to start load development but before I get set on one or the other which is best for whitetail 400 yards or less? Both are hard to find but once I find a load I want 1,000 plus bullets
My 6.5 creedmoor (Begara HMR) likes the 143 eldxs a little better than the 140 bergers. During load development I tried both bullets with H4350 and H4831sc. Finally settled on 42.1 g of H4350 and the eldx, oal 2.825. I believe that the eldx is a better hunting bullet and has slightly a better BC (.623 vs .606).

Go with Berger and never look back.
I second the Berger choice. Mono's have a tendency to not open and you are left with not finding your animal. I also concur not shooting the shoulder due to loss of meat and possible bullet stopping on the bone. Just my opinion but I have killed elk beyond 500 yards with the lil 6.5 Creedmoor and 140 gr Berger VLD's.

My 6.5 CM is definitely not my preference. "I" have plenty of better-suited chamberings for elk size game.
With practice the 6.5 Creedmoor will kill elk just fine. Like I said avoid the shoulder and get into the boiler room and that animal will not anywhere. I have seen it in person. Dead is dead.

Feenix never said it wouldn't kill an elk he just said he preferred other cartridges more suited for that purpose

Looks like this is about the Needmore and looking for bullets to load, but if you load it with SGK 6.5mm 140gr #1730 it will be a very good hunting cartridge. We traded/sold/gave away 1,500+ earlier 2021 for Elk and Deer hunters. Wish we would have held some more for ourselves. These SMKs are like "Unoptatium".

Berger 140 in my Bergara HMR were at .650 to 1.12 at 100yds, good enough for hunting, but not what I wanted. After fighting through 100 of those to not get what I wanted, I switched to Hammer Bullets, I tried the 124gr HH and they ran between .525 and .785, better, but wanted something different, jumped down to 110gr. HH and it went down to .340 to .495 at 100yds, that is what I was looking for. Took it hunting at start of season and shot a would have been a 9 pointer had he not broke two of his tines, behind and the shoulder into the lungs, ran roughly 60 yds and flipped over. No WASTED meat, between ribs and out the opposite side through a rib, caused roughly 1 inch opening on the off side. Blew up the lungs, worked as designed the shot was 109yds.

You assumed I do not practice. I have plenty of rifles set up for 1500 FT-LBS of energy to 1KY and beyond. So why in the heck would I use my 6.5 CM. My longest elk harvest to date is 931Y.

Most don't. 931 is a poke!!
Again you assumed. 931Y might be a poke but you will NEVER see me using a 6.5 CM on elk with it. LRS is NOT the same as LRH. I owe it to the animal to harvest them humanely. If 6.5 CM is your weapon of choice have at it, do NOT assume it is mine or others as well. We all have our personal preferences; the 6.5 CM is just not my preference for elk, period.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is capable of killing elk beyond 1000 yards humanely. A friend using a 6.5x47 killed a 400 class bull @ 1246 yards with one shot. That's an impressive shot with any rifle. Shot placement and the right bullet can change the playing field. If you don't want to shoot your 6.5 at long range don't by all means don't but don't knock those that do. Long range hunting can be done with the 6.5 also.
