6.5 CM build Information

By the way what is approprate jump?

In my experience, the 142 smk's have always liked to be between .030 and .035 from the lands. I have also found that they shoot really well at .145 from the lands to allow them to mag feed. I loose almost 200 fps and a full grain of case capacity though.

To me there is only one seating depth and that is the most accurate whatever it is. The O.P. hasn't stated what bullet he wants to shoot. To get the best of both worlds use say a .160 freebore reamer for 140's+ or a .120 for 120's-130 grain bullets is plenty of freebore. Also a 3" Wyatt box gives alot more options for seating depth so your not stuck with max .280. IMHO it's best to build for alot of options his barrel may not like SMK's or jump every one is different.

I have 2 6.5 cm being fed from a dbm and both work great.
One is a tikka T3 wearing a 18.5" melonited benchmark being fed from a CTR magazine @2.208" BTOL using 143 eld-x's. I use hornady brass and load it with 42gr of RL-17 and CCI200 primer @2737fps. The chamber allows a max BTOL of 2.246" so it's a 0.038" jump.
The other one is a Tac 30 wearing a 26" Bartlein being fed from an AICS 10rd mag @2.189" BTOL using 140 hybrids @3000 FPS. Nosler brass charged with 43gr of RL-17 and a CCI 200 primer. The chamber allows a max BTOL of 2.420" so it's a .069" jump.

I seriously doubt you can get better performance from a 6.5-284, 6.5x55 or any other without giving up a ton of barrel life, a greater powder expense (let's say at least 25%) and having to feed from a long action.

That's one third of what most bottom metal cost. Will probably go with the PTG stuff. Going with bartlein 22 in tube...hopping to get at least 2900 FPS out of the 140 - 143's
2900 is probably not going to happen with a 22in. I'm running 2885 with a 26in with rl-17. Rl-26 I ran up to 3014

:( Maybe I should go 24" was just trying to go with something a little easier to maneuver inside the deer stand as well as trim a little weight. Everything else I have is 24, 26 or 28. Every once in awhile I can get my daughter to go hunting with me and was thinking it would be a little easier handle.

The difference between 2880 and 2780 is negligible if it is consistent. People shoot 1000 yards with .308's pushing bullets less than 2500 fps and have done so happily for a long time. Build the rifle you want and find a load it likes.

I get 2875fps out of my .260 and 4831sc with 142 smk's at 2.96-2.99 coal. I shoot the same bullet at 2725 and 2.860-2.863 coal and it almost shoots better. Both are consistently sub .5" at 100 yards. Both are viable competition loads. One mag feeds, the other doesn't.

22in is fine. My dad runs about 2840 in his but it's alittle hot. He hasn't tried rl-26 though

Have you considered just keeping your 6mm barrel and have it rechambered to a 6mm creedmoor? I don't know what barrel twist you have, but if it is a 1-8" twist and already shoots amazing I'd keep it and turn it into a 6mm creedmoor!
