6.5-06 vs 6.5x284

My 6.5-06 shoots best at 2950fps using 140 A-max and H4831sc.Shoots in the low.3's. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. H4831 looks to be the best powder. It makes it even nicer that my 338 Lapua shoots best with H4831 - one powder for two rifles.

I'll definetly give it a try. It's worked well in other calibers; 25-06 & 338 Lapua.

Don't count out reloader 22 either as it works well in the 6.5-06 as well!

That's what I'm using in my 260 Dingo. It's a modified 6.5-06 that happily slings the 95 grain V-Max at 3975. Getting tired of buying Reloder 22 by the pound though. No one nearby sells it in bulk. And at 59 graims a case, it's definitely hungry.

Third Generation shows they have Reloader 22 in 5lb ers.:)

I know they have it in larger quantites, it's just finding it here. I can get the weirdest crap, but bulk powder is far and few between. Last time I found Varget, I bought all 30 pounds the store had.

You can get 3000 with both.

Isnt the current WR held by the 6.5x284 at 1.4 and change?

While I think both the 6.5x284 and 6.5-06 are fine cartridges, I'm partial to the 6.5x284. I do believe the 6.5x284 is inherently more accurate then the 6.5x06. Perhaps the the biggest advantage over the 6.5-06 is the case design and superb Lapua brass. I get 1000+ loads from a 100pc box of cases, primer pockets remain tight, with no thinning at the web. One annealing at 5 loads. While once difficult to acquire, over the past few years even Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops have it on their shelves.

from hodgdon's reloading manual, the edge, as far as velocity with a 142gr bullet, goes to the 6.5-06. what are the virtues/evils of each??? i plan on rebarreling a savage 110 with a 6.5 caliber.

I purchased a rebarreled Savage 116 Long Action with a brand new 6.5-284 Norma barrel from another member on this site. He was originally building it for himself, and, then, bought a beautiful custom rifle in the same caliber. I bought it as a fun gun to play with. It's now my favorite rifle to shoot. It's a absolute tack driver. Easy to find accurate loads. Heck, I was getting 0.5 moa groups when doing seating depth tests. It shoots 4 different bullets (130gr Accubond, 140gr VLD, 140gr SGK & 143gr ELD-X) 0.33-0.25" moa. I couldn't be happier with this caliber. It's a great mountain rifle. Light in weight and recoil.

Jwing,
Do you mind sharing your load data with the RL-26 for the Norma? Alliant doesn't have any data for the cartridge and I got a hold of some RL26 recently and want to give it a try. I only use H4831 or Retumbo

Thanks

Still working on it to refine, start at 54 br and work up, I don't have my data here now, but think is is going to be 55.5 31ish, been cold and snowing have not been in the shooting mood. Was using CCi br 2 primers,

Have had good luck with vit n 560, magnum, h 1000, retubmo is good to..
