40yr old Nikko Golden Eagle rifle needs new scope mounts. Need some help!

I've had this Golden Eagle 30.06 for over 40 years. It's been a great shooter. I want to put on a modern scope and give this to my son for his birthday in April. I am running into an unexpected problem. Seems nearly all of the best modern scopes have a tube that is too short to fit into the current individual scope rings. The tube must be a minimum of 5.75 inches with longer being better to fit. I am wondering if I can replace the original scope rings with a rail and use a new set of rings.

I am open to any suggestions offered.

Nothing specific. I am trying to determine what options I have based on what I can do as a mounting solution. If I have to use the original rings only, that will eliminate many new scopes.

well you got my interest on this one as I had never heard of them. I did find a few people online who claimed that rem700 mounts worked so maybe try that

According to Brownells 1980 catalogue the bases for the Golden Eagle are different from those for the Rem 700. Back then Redfield bases were available and the Golden Eagle used model SR 7000 and the Rem 700 used SR 700 two piece bases.

As for scopes the Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44mm has a ring spacing of 6.34" so that could be an option for you.

Talley makes bases for the Nikko Golden Eagle that allow some adjustment to the rings. I know Nikko had an agreement with Winchester early on to make their guns under license, so Winchester bases may work. I would give Talley a call.

I have been using the Talley lwt one piece base/ring jobbers a while now and like them allot. ( two separate base/ring pieces.)
They often allow turning 180° to get a offset or closer or farther.
Very solid & very light.

As for a optic, yes the trend os shorter tubes. This gains strength and with AR's being so popular the mounts allow very close ring proximity.

I like my 1898 Mausers and these have same issues. All my Mausers wear Leupolds older VX III 2.5-10. 4-14 & even vx II 3-9 are long enough and have good glass.
I like many of the newer optics amlot but they simply wont work u less you have a one piece pic rail base. I dislike them on a bolt gun.

I'd second Talley rings, their 2 piece ones just bolted straight into the factory tapped holes on my 43 year old Browning BLR, exceptional customer service also.

Swarovski Z3 and Z5 as well as the VX3 line come to mind for a classic rifle like this.
