358 Winchester performance at 300 yds

I think this is possible but need a few more variables to calculate what impact velocity of your 2 kills were.

Is 2300fps the muzzle velocity? What distance were the deer?

I'm calculating/guessing 2300 fps based on the stated velocity of 2475 out of a 24" barrel. I was shooting at 30 and 40 yards out of a 22" barrel. I arrived at around 2300 at those distances

I found myself down this rabbit hole recently, and went from 35 rem to 350 rem mag and ended up at 35 Sambar, which is a 35 cal WSM. I have a bunch of WSM brass, and a short action… If you have a long action donor I'd recommend looking at a 358 Norma mag.
That's pretty much the most performance you can get out of each action length in a 35 cal, and if we match barrel twist specs with an appropriate weight Hammer bullet I'm quite positive very impressive results will follow!

I hunted for a couple years with a Single shot T/C in 358 Win. Kinda like 45-70 "bang-flop-drag".....never lost an animal hit with it. All deer and black bear.

Back around 2000 I bought a lightly used Browning BLR in 358 Win and I love that rifle. I have only killed 2 deer with it at fairly close range, one at 200 yards and the other at 80 yards. Like others the deer died on the spot.
200 gr Hornady spire points as the Browning uses a magazine so it will handle spire points.

That's exactly the weapon I'm using. A TC Encore with a 22" barrel. I used the 45-70 barrel last year and it certainly did the job. How low a velocity can I still expect great results from the 358?

Yep. I live in Iowa, and I use my 375 ruger with a 235 grain Speer bullet or a 265 grain cast bullet. Both are deadly. I will be getting a Ruger 77 African chambered in 35 whelen in the next couple of months, and 2 of my friends also shoot 35 whelens.

I will tell you my 358 Norma is a 358 win plus about 150 to 200 yards...it's great other than finding headstamped brass nowadays almost like owning a wildcat

Hornady 358 200 gr. SP is not the bullet it was back in the 90's.....in my BLR needed some bullets in 2014 loaded them the same as always recieved a bear tag in Michigan shot a 300 lb. bear broadside at 80 yards just in back of the shoulder hit one rib the bullet only penetrated about 9" but came apart like a varmit bullet biggest piece found was 58 grains plus a bunch of much smaller pieces....
I was very leary to use the same bullet come deer season but did any ways shot a nice 8 point 198 pounds dressed quartering away hit near the last rib going forward only 7-8" of penetration distroying only one lung it came apart like the one I shot the bear with was a very long tracking job luckly there was over a foot of snow....bad part I just couldn't leave the deer until the next day because of wolves in the aera....
With that deer it was the last Hornady bullet I have ever used for hunting only will use Cutting Edge Bullets now !

If/when you change bullets for your .358, keep in mind that many of that caliber have strong jackets for use on heavy game. I had a couple of "failures" with my .35 Whelen on whitetail before finding some thinner jacketed bullets that I believe were intended for use in the .35 Remington or similar cartridges. The last deer I shot with my Whelen using the bullets intended for lower velocity dropped the deer inside of 12 yards. And that deer presented a bad angle. The bullet path was from the rear of the near lung through to the off-side shoulder.

If you don't mind sharing, what bullets were you shooting from your 35 Whelen. I might give them a try.

I recently loaded my 35 Whelen with 140 grain Stone Hammer Bullets going 3250fps. They are sub moa out to 500 yards!. Might be something to think about.

Would like your load data if you don't mind sharing.

I shot two deer this year with a 358 Winchester Hornady 200 gr. SP traveling at approximately 2300 fps. Both went 4 legs up immediately. I like the performance of this caliber/bullet at this velocity. I'd like to buy a barrel/gun that can mimic this velocity and performance at 250 to 400 yards. I'm thinking 35 Whelan or 358 Norma mag in a 26" barrel.

Any input would be appreciated.

A 35 Whelen pushing a Nosler 200gr AB at 2,900 fps at the muzzle will still be in the range you are desiring at 250-300 yards. At my altitude, it is still over 2,300 fps at 325 yards and just under 2,200 fps at 400 yards. Your altitude may vary.

I see the Hammer folks have load data for a 22" 35 Whelen with the 178gr Shock Hammer going 3220 fps. That bullet will have excellent terminal performance on deer and pigs down to 1800 fps. Here is a snip showing ballistics:

I'd second the notion of a 338-06. I had that caliber barrel on a TC Encore. I have shot at least a half dozen deer and three cow elk with it, all one-shot kills. I was using 200 gr accubonds at about 2800 fps. you could eat right up to the bullet hole. all shots were complete pass throughs with great blood trails...which were not needed. Even the elk shot didn't go past 20 yards. Shots ranged from 30 yards to 250 for the cow elk. Of course, I sold that rifle and miss it. I have a Ruger mkII in 280 rem that tempts me to have JES bore it to .33 caliber...but the 280 is such a sweet caliber that I can't bring myself to do it.
