338 Sherman & Sherman Short

That's 340 wby territory which is amazing. Looks like the 4350-4831 burn rate is where you want to be. 100V and as you suggested Rl16 may get you the stability and speed your looking for. Awesome stuff right there

Thanks Capt! "Idahotrekker" likes 100v also. I will have to try some......Rich

Lookin good Rich!!!
Did they happen to try some RL 23? Still curious about that also. Maybe the faster burn rate compared to 26 will work even though its not as dense and holds a few grains less. One of these or SS version will be in my future and possibly sooner than planned if my 270 Sherman Lilja barrel continues having issues that I cant get solved.

I will try 23 when I get the rifle next week. I think that knowing now that 26 is too slow and 17 works so well, the 338ss is looking VERY promising:D

Yes it is looking Promising!!! I'll bet you find N560 100v and 23 will do great in this round. Kinda thinking the 16, 100v and 17 might be even better in SS. Looking forward to the results.

I did not use Rl23 based on QL predictions. I wasn't comfortable packing any more than 112% into a case. In other rifles Rl 23 & 25 are pretty fluffy and don't come close to Rl26 in velocity. 7828sc didn't make the 2800 target (2750), but would be very good.

Out of curiosity I looked at my notes on 338Wm from years ago and then checked 120 loads listed from others and only 4 made 2800fps with 250gr bullets. Norma MRP, RL22, &RL19 were the powders used.

Trying to compare RL16 to 17 is difficult, but 16 appears to exceed 17 a little with the same weight bullet.

I should add the three powders had 2-3gr spreads going into 1 1/2"- 2" groups with a lefty shooting righthanded and a trigger as light as a feather, (not the best combo for accuracy).

I am skeptical of 23 too Cliff. Usually it won't pressure up with a case full any more than 26 because a Sherman case holds about 4 grains less of it (FLUFFY)! Thank you for your testing. It saves me having the BS flag getting thrown at me!:D.......Rich

It was a fun break from homework.

Sweet to shoot, although I did want to take a rasp to that thumbhole.

If I ever got a .338 bug I think this one would do it for me.

I have a couple of pics of the 338 Sherman courtesy of "Bigngreen". This was my old original 6.5 Sherman that I had him re barrel. It is a trued 700 LA with a 3b, 10 twist Bart cut to 24" with a Little Beast Brake. Rhian applied the cerakote. The stock is a thumbhole sporter by H-S Precision with BDL bottom metal. COAL with a 250 Berger is only 3.565" so there is plenty of room. It also has a Jewell trigger. I plan on doing some camo on the stock that will compliment the barreled action? I want to put a scope on it that will give me good low power field of view for carry, but capable of long range work too. I am not sure which scope yet though. I plan on staying under $1000. Any suggestions?

I have the moa version of this very hard to beat anywhere near this price. Eyebox is alittle unforgiving. It is heavy and bulky for a brush gun. There is better glass around the 750 dollar mark.
Now the good the DM reticle gets you on target fast if your hunting bedded bucks and bulls. The turrets work well even if alittly mushy. You can make your own zero stop 140moa of travel. It's on sale now

No nitride on this one Rich? I like the brake :D. It looks like it wants to hunt. I did a FDE, Coyote tan, and black camo for a guy and it turned out pretty cool.

Hi Nathan! No nitride. I decided since it is making over 2800' already and it should be easy on barrels, I will just shoot it and not waste time:D I also wanted to build one like I figured anyone might build to give a real world velocity, etc. I figured a 24" 3b (#5) barrel without any treatment was the best choice.
Ya, the brake is pretty cool and I hear it works! I figured those 250's might be a little hard on an old guy in a rifle that weight. Rhian shipped it today so I should have it by weeks end. With this dang moving again, I hope I can work in some trigger time.
I may ask you about the camo treatment when I get closer......Rich

The color is McMillian FDE, it just a shade darker than FDE and matches Bell and Carlson stocks very well. I really like it for a tan color.
Someone keeps sending me those brakes, kinda like them :D
