Well you made my choice for you really easy ! You have a 300 Rum already take that brass and build the 338 Edge .
If you were going fresh I would say build the 338 Rum . Brass is out there dies are way cheaper than the Edge .
This info is coming from a guy that has 3 of each 338's .
I built two carbon rifles in Remington actions . Both have 30 " barrels plus brake. 338 rum 300 berger , 91.5 gr. H-1000 = 2884 ft.per.sec. 338 Edge 300 bergers 92 gr.H-1000 @ 2884 ft.per.sec
No difference. There's were put together to hunt with . And let me tell you they Work !!
My Heavy 338 Edge has a Kreiger heavy Palma 30" fluted barrel plus brake. It loves the 300 berger Otm at 2849 ft.per.sec and has been sent out to 2053 yrds. With excellent results on steel .
I'm looking at n570 and r33 for few more ft.per.sec possibly.

Either way you look at this it is a win win they both perform so close it's crazy!
I'm a Remington guy . The Papua might be great but I have no intention of heading that way !
Best of luck in your quest for the Won !!

I also have a factory Remington 338 ultra mag Bdl Deluxe that shoots great . I found a load with -H-1000 & 285 Eldm that seems to work great , I haven't shot any game yet but i can tell you the target was toast !

i'm curious as to why no one mentions the 338-378 Wby mag? is it because of the belted case? i'm over 2900 fps with the 300's with retumbo & have just started working the load. i started with h50bmg & couldn't get the velocity so am trying the retumbo & just got in some vit. n570 & will be trying it to.

Because he has a regular magnum boltface in his action. If he had the larger boltface I would have said Lapua AI - Brass is very strong and it will gain 100fps over the edge. The 338-378 is a good option, but someone needs to make some solid brass for it.

Other option flr the op
If you don't want to do a 4" mag box I think a 338-30nosler throated to seat the bullets correctly would get you close (say 100fps) in fps to an edge/rum and still feed a 300 berger from the standard mag box.

I'd be shocked if a 338-30 nosler or 338-28 nosler would even get close. Definitely interested if they can though.

what's wrong with weatherby/norma brass? i thought i'd read on here it was pretty quality brass?
