.338-06

Paparock,

I had a 338-06 for a while. It was an accurate package but for the size and weight of the rifle it didn't stay with me long. Sold it to a friend.

I built a sporter weight 338 RCM when it first came out. Reamer is SAMMI spec. 22" #2 Lilja on an old short action m77 tang safety Ruger in a McMillan ultralight stock. Weight is just under 8 lbs. Magazine lengthened to 3.1" useful OAL is 3.050"

Tried several bullet/powder combinations Fed 210 match used throughout:

225 accubonds: worked up to 61 gr of RL-17 / 2750 fps
180 nosler bt: worked up to 64 gr of RL-17/ 3045 fps.
215 sierras: worked up to 55 gr of Varget, most accurate 54 gr/ 2730 fps.
215 sierras: worked up to 64 gr of H4350/ 2865 fps

Ended up using the 225 Accubond to take three cow elk.

More recently tried shooting the 300 gr Berger OTM:
300 gr berger seated to fit and feed from magazine
54 gr of RL-17 2349 fps (don't laugh till you crunch the numbers, it is a very interesting combination with its high BC )

The next time I get drawn for cow elk the 300 gr will be used. Most of my hunting is the north facing slopes at close range.

You guys should really consider the 338 sherman. It's the same build requirement with a lot more velocity and super accuracy. We are reaching 2900 with a 250 Berger using Superformance and mid 2800's with H100V and RL17. 338/06 on left and Sherman on right. We have 4 different builds that all shoot the same velocities. Mine has a 24" barrel!

Can you fire from brass using norma .338-06 brass?

There was a gorgeous Cooper .338-06 in the classifieds here a few months ago. I told myself that were it still there when I got home I'd buy it.

Alas, it didn't last.
